India Rebuffs Pakistani Disinformation Campaign Targeting Armed Forces Amidst Heightened Tensions

New Delhi – In the wake of the recent Pahalgam attack and India’s resolute response, a concerted disinformation campaign originating from Pakistan has targeted senior Indian Armed Forces officials, aiming to sow discord and undermine public trust. This orchestrated effort, involving Pakistani media channels and a network of social media accounts, has propagated false narratives regarding the dismissal and demotion of key military figures. Indian authorities have swiftly debunked these claims, exposing them as part of a broader pattern of Pakistani propaganda designed to create doubt about India’s military preparedness.

The disinformation campaign specifically targeted high-ranking officers involved in intelligence and operational command. One prominent target was Lieutenant General DS Rana, Director General of the Defence Intelligence Agency. False reports circulated by Pakistani media outlets claimed that Lt. Gen. Rana was sacked and "exiled" to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands due to alleged operational failures. In reality, Lt. Gen. Rana received a promotion to the esteemed position of Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN), a tri-services command of strategic importance.

Another victim of this disinformation campaign was Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar, whose retirement after four decades of distinguished service was twisted into a narrative of forced removal. Pakistani social media accounts falsely claimed that Lt. Gen. Kumar was "shunted out" of the Army’s Northern Command due to alleged failures connected to the Pahalgam attack. Official records clearly demonstrate that Lt. Gen. Kumar’s retirement on April 30, 2025, was pre-planned and announced well in advance, having no connection to the Pahalgam incident.

The disinformation campaign extended to the Indian Air Force, targeting Air Marshal SP Dharkar, the former Vice Chief of the Air Staff. False allegations circulated online claimed that Air Marshal Dharkar was dismissed for refusing to engage in military conflict with Pakistan. These claims are unequivocally false. Air Marshal Dharkar completed his tenure and retired honorably on April 30 of this year, receiving a ceremonial guard of honor and paying homage at the National War Memorial. His successor, Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari, assumed the role of Vice Chief of the Air Staff seamlessly, further highlighting the fabricated nature of the Pakistani narrative.

Indian authorities have identified a clear pattern of deception in these disinformation campaigns. Each wave of false narratives emerges following a strong diplomatic response from India to Pakistani provocations, particularly in the context of the Pahalgam attack. The deliberate targeting of senior military leaders responsible for intelligence and operations suggests a calculated attempt to undermine India’s defense posture and create an impression of internal disarray.

Sources have pointed to the involvement of ISI-linked social media handles in propagating these disinformation campaigns. These accounts have a history of spreading misinformation and engaging in online propaganda activities aimed at destabilizing India. The coordinated nature of the disinformation efforts, coupled with their timing and specific targets, strongly suggests a deliberate strategy orchestrated by elements within Pakistan.

India’s response to this disinformation campaign has been swift and decisive. The Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, Ministry of Defence, promptly issued clarifications regarding each false narrative, ensuring that the misinformation did not gain traction within India. This proactive approach demonstrates India’s commitment to transparency and its determination to counter malicious propaganda aimed at its armed forces. The rapid dissemination of accurate information by Indian authorities has effectively neutralized the intended impact of the disinformation campaign.

This incident highlights the growing challenge posed by disinformation campaigns, particularly in the context of heightened geopolitical tensions. The rapid spread of false information through social media and other online platforms can have serious consequences, potentially undermining public trust, exacerbating tensions, and even influencing national security decisions. India’s robust response underscores the need for vigilance and proactive measures to counter disinformation campaigns and uphold the integrity of information in the digital age. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of critical media literacy in navigating the complex information landscape of the 21st century.
