Sunderland Council Grapples with Social Media Misinformation Amidst Social Cohesion Efforts

Sunderland City Council is actively developing a social cohesion strategy in the wake of disturbances that shook the city in August 2024. This initiative involves collaboration with the Sunderland Partnership, various organizations, and community representatives to address the root causes of social division and foster a stronger sense of unity among residents. The strategy aims to provide a framework for public, private, and voluntary sectors to work together, supporting communities and promoting active participation from all residents. The overarching goal is to cultivate thriving, proud communities where everyone feels a sense of belonging and contributes to the collective well-being.

A key challenge highlighted during recent discussions on the strategy is the pervasive spread of misinformation and disinformation on social media, particularly concerning migrant communities. Councillor Antony Mullen, leader of the Conservative group, voiced concerns about the damaging impact of false narratives circulating online and questioned the council’s ability to counter this trend. He stressed the urgent need for effective measures to combat the proliferation of misleading information.

Council leader Michael Mordey acknowledged the potent influence of social media and the difficulties in addressing this complex issue. He expressed frustration at the ease with which misinformation spreads and the susceptibility of individuals to fabricated stories, often fueled by certain political agendas. Cllr Mordey emphasized that tackling this problem requires a collective effort from all segments of society, not just the council. He called for a concerted approach involving political parties, community organizations, and individuals to counter misinformation with factual information and positive action.

Cllr Mordey highlighted the responsibility of political parties in disseminating accurate information and refraining from spreading falsehoods for political gain. He stressed the importance of truth and action in countering the negative effects of misinformation and disinformation. Cllr Malcolm Bond, a Liberal Democrat representative, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the moral obligation of individuals to challenge misinformation and speak out against hateful rhetoric. He emphasized the importance of individuals taking a stand against unacceptable statements and not allowing harmful narratives to go unchallenged. He stressed that countering misinformation requires active participation from everyone and cannot be left solely to authorities.

Councillor Claire Rowntree, the Labour chair of the scrutiny coordinating committee, acknowledged the difficulty in persuading individuals who reject factual information, highlighting the core challenge of combating misinformation. She emphasized the need to find ways to help people distinguish between credible information and disinformation to foster a shared understanding of reality. This requires developing critical thinking skills and fostering a healthy skepticism towards information encountered online. Councillor Linda Williams, also representing Labour, stressed the importance of early education to equip young people with the ability to discern fact from fiction and understand the consequences of spreading hateful content. She emphasized the role of education in shaping responsible online behavior and cultivating respect for others.

Cllr Mordey revealed that the council’s deputy leader had recently addressed a House of Commons select committee about the role of disinformation in instigating the August riots. He underscored the tangible consequences of misinformation and disinformation, urging the government to intervene and implement measures to address this growing problem. The council’s appeal to the government highlights the need for national-level strategies and policies to combat the spread of misinformation and protect communities from its harmful effects. The council’s ongoing efforts to develop a social cohesion strategy demonstrate its commitment to addressing the root causes of division and building a stronger, more inclusive community. The council’s focus on tackling misinformation and disinformation is crucial in achieving its goal of creating a harmonious society where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.
