Nevada County Clarifies Information Regarding Hope Ridge House

Hope Ridge House: Addressing Truckee’s Critical Need for Permanent Supportive Housing

TRUCKEE, Calif. – Amidst swirling misinformation on social media, Nevada County officials have moved to clarify the purpose and nature of the property located at 12255 Sierra Drive. Contrary to online speculation, the site is not intended to be a homeless shelter, transitional housing facility, substance use treatment center, warming shelter, or halfway house. Instead, the County envisions the property as the future home of Hope Ridge House, a permanent supportive housing project designed to provide stable, long-term housing for Truckee residents experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

The project took a significant step forward on January 14th when the Nevada County Board of Supervisors voted to apply for a grant to potentially purchase the Sierra Drive property. The property is currently leased by the County and operated by AMI Housing (AMIH), ensuring compliance with existing residential zoning regulations. This move underscores the County’s commitment to addressing the pressing need for permanent supportive housing in the Truckee area, a need highlighted by the recent Point-in-Time Count revealing approximately 30 individuals experiencing homelessness in Truckee.

Hope Ridge House aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for its residents. The project will offer long-term housing solutions, with residents signing leases and paying rent, fostering a sense of stability and responsibility. Crucially, the initiative goes beyond simply providing shelter. Residents will receive comprehensive case management services, including life skills coaching, mental health support, and employment assistance, empowering them to rebuild their lives and achieve self-sufficiency.

To ensure a secure and supportive community within Hope Ridge House, strict resident selection criteria will be implemented. Violent felons, arsonists, and sexual offenders will be prohibited from residing at the facility. The program prioritizes individuals with established ties to the Truckee community, reflecting a commitment to supporting local residents in need. Furthermore, a live-in house manager and an on-site case manager will be present to provide ongoing support and ensure the smooth operation of the facility.

The stark contrast between the availability of permanent supportive housing in Truckee and western Nevada County underscores the critical need for Hope Ridge House. While western Nevada County boasts 18 housing sites serving 221 residents, Truckee currently lacks any dedicated permanent supportive housing options. This disparity leaves a significant gap in services for vulnerable individuals in the Truckee area, a gap Hope Ridge House is designed to address. The project adopts a model proven effective nationwide, offering a pathway towards stable housing and self-sufficiency for those struggling with homelessness.

Recognizing the importance of community involvement, Nevada County is actively developing a comprehensive operational plan for Hope Ridge House, incorporating feedback from residents and stakeholders. A neighborhood forum is scheduled for February to provide a platform for open dialogue, answer questions, address concerns, and share updates on the project’s progress. This commitment to transparency and community engagement aims to foster understanding and collaboration as the project moves forward. For more information and ongoing updates, residents are encouraged to visit the Hope Ridge House project page or contact Nevada County Health and Human Services directly. The County aims to ensure that Hope Ridge House becomes a valuable asset to the community, providing much-needed support for its most vulnerable members.
