National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Denies Encirclement of 114th Territorial Defense Brigade near Kupiansk

Kyiv Rejects Russian Claims of Ukrainian Brigade Encirclement Near Kupyansk

Kyiv, Ukraine – The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) has vehemently denied Russian assertions that elements of the 114th Territorial Defense Brigade have been encircled near Kupyansk in the Kharkiv Oblast. The Center for Countering Disinformation, operating under the NSDC, dismissed the claims as disinformation, characterizing them as part of Russia’s ongoing information warfare campaign aimed at undermining Ukrainian morale and sowing discord among allies. The Ukrainian military maintains that its forces are holding their positions and conducting defensive operations in the area.

The Russian Ministry of Defense had previously declared the “successful encirclement” of over 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers belonging to the 114th Brigade. Moscow’s pronouncements, amplified through state-controlled media outlets, detailed a multi-pronged offensive operation involving airborne troops, ground forces, and artillery strikes, purportedly trapping Ukrainian units near the strategically important city of Kupyansk. These claims were accompanied by visuals purportedly depicting destroyed Ukrainian equipment and captured soldiers, the authenticity of which has not been independently verified.

The Ukrainian counter-narrative underscores the continued intensity of fighting along the Kupyansk-Lyman axis, a frontline sector that has seen a renewed Russian offensive push in recent weeks. Military analysts observe that Moscow likely aims to regain lost ground in this area and potentially disrupt Ukraine’s ongoing counteroffensive operations further south. While acknowledging the difficult battlefield conditions, Ukrainian officials insist that their forces are inflicting heavy casualties on the advancing Russian troops and actively contesting Russian control of settlements.

The disputed narrative surrounding the alleged encirclement of the 114th Brigade highlights the critical role of information warfare in the ongoing conflict. Both sides actively employ propaganda and disinformation tactics to shape public perception, influence international support, and demoralize opposing forces. Discerning the veracity of battlefield claims remains challenging, particularly given the restricted access for independent journalists and international observers in the active combat zones.

Independent military analysts suggest that while Russian forces have made incremental gains near Kupyansk, the scale of their advance and the extent of Ukrainian losses remain unclear. Some experts caution against accepting either side’s claims at face value, emphasizing the need for independent verification through open-source intelligence and other available data. The fog of war, exacerbated by the information war, makes it difficult to determine the true operational picture on the ground.

The battle for Kupyansk and its surrounding areas underscores the strategic significance of this region in the broader context of the war. For Russia, recapturing territory lost during Ukraine’s fall counteroffensive carries symbolic and operational weight. Conversely, Ukraine is determined to hold the line and prevent Russia from achieving any significant breakthroughs that could jeopardize its own offensive plans. The ongoing clashes and conflicting narratives highlight the likely protracted nature of the conflict, with both sides vying for military advantage and control of the narrative. As the fighting continues, the need for accurate and verifiable information becomes even more critical.
