Six Tubers Over Dillon Falls: A Deschutes River Tragedy Unfolds

A leisurely summer float on the Deschutes River took a tragic turn on Saturday, July 19th, when a group of six tubers missed the designated takeout point and plummeted over the treacherous Dillon Falls, a Class 5 rapid known for its turbulent waters and 15-foot drop. The incident, which occurred southwest of Bend, Oregon, triggered a massive multi-agency search and rescue operation involving the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Bend Fire & Rescue, Bend Police Department, AirLink, and numerous search and rescue volunteers. Three individuals were rescued immediately, while one was found deceased at the scene. The frantic search for the remaining two missing tubers began, marking the start of a grueling and emotionally charged recovery effort.

Days of Searching: A Community Rallies in Support

The search efforts continued relentlessly over the following days, with divers, search dogs, drones, boats, and aircraft deployed to scour the river and its banks. The challenging terrain, coupled with the dangerous conditions of the rapids, made the recovery operation exceptionally difficult. As news of the tragedy spread, the Central Oregon community rallied in support, offering donations of food, drinks, and supplies to the tireless search and rescue crews, many of whom are unpaid volunteers. This outpouring of support underscored the shared sense of grief and the collective hope of bringing closure to the families of the victims.

Recovery and Identification: Two Victims Named

On Monday, July 21st, a somber milestone was reached as search and rescue divers recovered the body of a second victim, a female, from the river below Dillon Falls. The discovery, aided by a human remains detection K-9, brought the number of confirmed fatalities to two. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office later released the names of the deceased: Amanda Loyd, 40, of Rockwall, Texas, and Lindsay Bashan, 33, of Parkland, Florida. While the identification of the two victims brought some closure, the search for the remaining missing tuber, a male, intensified.

Innovative Tactics and Unwavering Determination

As the search entered its fifth day, rescuers employed increasingly innovative tactics to navigate the difficult terrain and treacherous currents. Plans were developed to scale the steep canyon walls surrounding the falls, allowing crews to lower cameras into the otherwise inaccessible rapids where the missing tuber was believed to be trapped. Simultaneously, teams continued to search the calmer waters below the falls, utilizing sonar boats, underwater drones, and specially trained dogs. A plane equipped with specialized cameras was also deployed to conduct aerial scans of the river, hoping to gain a clearer view beneath the surface.

Family’s Plea and Community’s Response

Amidst the ongoing search, the mother of the missing individual issued a heartfelt statement through the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, expressing gratitude for the tireless efforts of the search and rescue teams and asking for privacy during this unimaginable time. She also addressed misinformation circulating online, emphasizing the complexity of the search and urging the public to refrain from speculation or interference. The family’s plea resonated deeply within the community, reinforcing the importance of respecting their grief and allowing the professionals to carry out their work without distraction.

Safety Reminders and Ongoing Investigation

The tragedy at Dillon Falls serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers of recreating in natural environments. Authorities stressed the importance of water safety precautions, including knowing the river conditions, wearing life jackets, and avoiding alcohol and drugs while on the water. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident, while the search for the final missing tuber remains ongoing. The community remains hopeful that closure will soon be brought to the grieving family, allowing the healing process to begin.
