Misinformation Follows Indian Airstrikes: Pakistan Disseminates Fabricated Narratives

India Launches Airstrikes on Terror Camps in Pakistan and PoK; Pakistan Resorts to Disinformation Campaign

NEW DELHI – Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated dramatically on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, as the Indian Air Force (IAF) launched precision airstrikes targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation, codenamed "Operation Sindoor," was a direct response to a recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, and aimed to dismantle the network responsible for planning and executing cross-border attacks against India. Indian officials confirmed that the strikes focused on nine specific locations identified as hubs for terrorist activities. While India maintained a strategic silence on the specifics of the operation’s impact, Pakistan immediately initiated a widespread disinformation campaign, attempting to portray a narrative of successful retaliation and downplaying the effectiveness of the Indian strikes.

The Pakistani media, including state-run broadcaster PTV, played a central role in disseminating unverified and fabricated information. Reports quickly emerged claiming the downing of two Indian fighter jets, a narrative unsupported by any credible evidence. These claims were amplified through social media platforms, where manipulated images and videos, falsely labeled as evidence of downed Indian aircraft, were widely circulated. This flood of misinformation aimed to project an image of Pakistani air superiority and dilute the impact of the Indian offensive.

One particularly egregious example of this disinformation campaign involved a widely circulated image of a purportedly destroyed Indian jet. Fact-checking quickly debunked this image, revealing it to be a photograph of a MiG-29 fighter jet that had crashed in Rajasthan’s Barmer district in September 2024 – months before the current operation. This blatant misuse of outdated and irrelevant imagery highlights the desperate attempt to mislead both domestic and international audiences. Further fueling the disinformation, Pakistan’s Director-General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) falsely claimed on social media that the entire Pakistan Air Force was airborne, implying a state of high alert and readiness to engage. This claim directly contradicted India’s assertion that all strikes were conducted from within Indian airspace, further exposing the deceptive nature of the Pakistani narrative.

Pakistani media outlets, including Dunya News TV and ARY News, actively participated in the propaganda effort. Dunya News TV, for instance, reported that Pakistani armed forces had responded effectively to the Indian strikes and shot down two Indian fighter jets, a claim echoing the unsubstantiated reports circulating earlier. ARY News similarly circulated outdated images, falsely portraying them as recent visuals of downed Indian aircraft. These fabricated reports, lacking any official confirmation or credible evidence, served to bolster the false narrative of Pakistani air superiority and successful retaliation.

The Indian government, while confirming the airstrikes, refrained from engaging in a public war of words or releasing specific details of the operation’s impact. This measured response stood in stark contrast to Pakistan’s frenzied dissemination of disinformation. Indian officials emphasized the focus on dismantling terrorist infrastructure and preemptively addressing threats to national security. This strategic silence further exposed the hollowness of the Pakistani claims, as India chose to let the operational facts speak for themselves rather than engage in a propaganda battle.

The incident underscores the increasing use of disinformation as a tool in geopolitical conflicts. Pakistan’s reliance on fabricated reports and manipulated imagery not only aimed to deceive its own populace but also sought to influence international opinion and portray India as the aggressor. This tactic, increasingly prevalent in the digital age, highlights the challenges of discerning truth from falsehood in a complex and rapidly evolving information landscape. The international community must be vigilant in identifying and countering such disinformation campaigns to ensure accurate reporting and informed public discourse on critical global events. As the dust settles, the long-term implications of this operation and the accompanying disinformation campaign will undoubtedly shape the future trajectory of India-Pakistan relations.
