Pope Leo XIV Faces Early Wave of Disinformation, Echoing Predecessor Pope Francis

VATICAN CITY – Barely a week into his papacy, Pope Leo XIV finds himself navigating a turbulent sea of misinformation, a familiar challenge faced by his predecessor, Pope Francis. False narratives and fabricated stories have proliferated across social media, targeting the new pontiff on various fronts, from his stance on social issues to unfounded accusations of covering up clerical sexual abuse. The rapid spread of these misleading claims underscores the challenges posed by online disinformation in the modern era and its potential to distort public perception of religious figures.

One prominent example involves a manipulated video circulating online, purportedly showing Pope Leo XIV deliberately turning away from an LGBTQ rainbow flag during a Vatican greeting. Fact-checking reveals that the flag in question is actually the Italian peace flag, a symbol predating the LGBTQ flag. The video, available on the Vatican’s official YouTube channel, documents a meeting between the Pope and media professionals and offers no evidence of the alleged snub. This incident highlights the deceptive nature of online content and the ease with which manipulated visuals can be used to spread misinformation.

Another false narrative circulating online attributes a "woke" prayer to Pope Leo XIV. The fabricated quote promotes compassion, truth, and grace, urging individuals to be "awake, be loving, be woke." No credible sources support this claim, and fact-checking organizations have debunked the image containing the fabricated quote. Its creator has even admitted to its fabrication. The propagation of this false prayer demonstrates how easily misinformation can be crafted and disseminated to potentially manipulate public opinion, particularly within faith-based communities.

Much speculation surrounds Pope Leo XIV’s approach to social issues, particularly LGBTQ+ rights, given Pope Francis’s more inclusive stance compared to previous pontiffs. Pope Francis’s compassionate approach to the LGBTQ+ community, alongside his support for immigrants, the poor, and his pronouncements on the climate crisis, created significant expectations. Many observers anticipate that Pope Leo XIV will maintain this trajectory, pushing the Church further towards progressive social positions, following in the perceived liberal legacy of his predecessor.

However, more serious allegations have emerged, accusing the then-Cardinal Prevost of concealing sexual abuse cases involving a Peruvian priest in 2004 and again in 2022 while serving as bishop of Chiclayo. Further accusations arose about his alleged involvement in covering up another case of abuse in Chicago. The Vatican vehemently denies these claims, emphasizing a thorough investigation by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, which cleared Pope Leo XIV of any wrongdoing, describing his conduct as "impeccable." The timing of these allegations, surfacing just before the papal conclave, has also raised suspicions.

Journalistic investigations lend further credence to the Vatican’s denial. Pedro Salinas, a Peruvian journalist specializing in clerical sexual abuse investigations, has found no evidence substantiating the accusations against Pope Leo XIV. The lack of documentary evidence or reliable testimonies underscores the unfounded nature of these claims, suggesting a potential attempt to discredit the newly elected pontiff. The emergence of these serious allegations highlights the vulnerability of religious figures to unfounded attacks and the importance of rigorous fact-checking and investigative journalism to counter the spread of misinformation. The confluence of these false narratives early in Pope Leo XIV’s papacy poses significant challenges, mirroring the experience of Pope Francis before him. These incidents underscore the importance of critical media literacy in the digital age, urging individuals to carefully scrutinize online content and rely on verified, reputable sources. The battle against misinformation demands constant vigilance, both from individuals and institutions, to safeguard the truth and protect against the potentially damaging effects of fabricated narratives.
