ABUJA, NIGERIA – In a compelling address at the TEDxNTIC Abuja Youth Passion event, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, underscored the crucial role of information literacy for young people in navigating the complex digital landscape. He emphasized that this essential skill empowers individuals to distinguish between credible information and the deceptive tactics of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, which pose significant threats to societal harmony and informed decision-making. He stressed the urgent need to empower youth with the skills required to navigate the complexities of the online world and to discern truth from falsehood.
The Minister acknowledged the transformative power of new technologies while lamenting the simultaneous rise of challenges to the information ecosystem, particularly the proliferation of fake news and misinformation. He recounted his own personal journey, from aspiring broadcaster to his current role, to illustrate the power of passion, resilience, and a commitment to truth. He encouraged young people to remain steadfast in pursuing their dreams, drawing a parallel to his own experience of having his early broadcasting aspirations seemingly thwarted, only to later find himself leading the nation’s communication efforts and championing media and information literacy on a global scale. Minister Idris detailed his five-pillar approach to refining the Nigerian media and information landscape, emphasizing the importance of combating fake news, disinformation, and misinformation. This strategy includes the establishment of the UNESCO Category 2 Media and Information Literacy Institute in Abuja, a pioneering initiative aimed at providing crucial training in media and information literacy to individuals in Nigeria and beyond. He expressed optimism that the Institute, slated to commence operations in November 2025, would position Nigeria as a global leader in fostering information literacy and combating the detrimental effects of misinformation.
The Minister expressed hope that this initiative would not only benefit Nigerian youth but also serve as a model for other nations grappling with similar challenges in the digital age. He reiterated his belief in the transformative power of education coupled with media and information literacy, stating that these combined forces would equip young people to become responsible digital citizens and contribute meaningfully to a safer and better-informed world.
