Mexico’s Migration Disinformation Crisis: A System Failing Asylum Seekers

A five-part investigation by Conexión Migrante and Factchequeado, supported by the International Center for Journalists, reveals a systemic disinformation crisis surrounding migration in Mexico. This crisis, fueled by government inaction and amplified by social media, leaves vulnerable asylum seekers exposed to fraud, exploitation, and a bureaucratic labyrinth. The investigation, spanning from Tapachula in the south to Monterrey in the north, uncovered outdated government websites, misleading social media posts, and a stark absence of official guidance, creating a vacuum filled by misinformation and predatory actors.

The investigation paints a bleak picture of the asylum process in Mexico. Aspiring refugees face long queues before dawn, often paying for a place in line, only to encounter a lack of official information or support. Government websites offer outdated information, leading individuals to defunct offices. Social media platforms, particularly TikTok, are rife with false accounts and misleading advice, preying on the desperation of those seeking refuge. Migrants report paying exorbitant fees for taxi rides and legal services, often based on false promises and misinformation.

The Mexican government’s response to this crisis has been inadequate at best. While President Claudia Sheinbaum often refers to Mexican migrants in the US as “heroes,” she rarely addresses the plight of foreign migrants seeking refuge within Mexico. The investigation found a disconnect between the government’s rhetoric of “Mexican humanism” and the reality on the ground, where bureaucratic inefficiency and a lack of transparency reign. Experts suggest that this inaction aligns with the United States’ goal of reducing migrant arrivals, prioritizing border control over humanitarian concerns.

This information gap has created a fertile ground for exploitation. The investigation documented numerous instances of fraud, including individuals selling appointments for services that are legally free, lawyers charging exorbitant fees for dubious assistance, and scammers promising visas and legal protection in exchange for money. The relocation of COMAR’s Mexico City office to a remote location in Naucalpan, following complaints from residents, has further exacerbated the problem, making it more difficult for asylum seekers to access essential services and increasing their vulnerability to exploitation.

The proliferation of misinformation on social media, particularly TikTok and Facebook, is a key driver of this crisis. The investigation identified dozens of accounts spreading misleading information about migration processes, ranging from fake job offers to visa scams. These accounts often capitalize on current events, such as Trump’s tightened border policies, to promote Mexico as a “Plan B” and exploit the anxieties of those seeking refuge. The lack of official information on social media leaves migrants reliant on these unreliable sources, increasing their risk of falling victim to fraud and exploitation.

The investigation highlights the urgent need for the Mexican government to address this disinformation crisis. This includes updating government websites with accurate and accessible information, establishing a strong presence on social media platforms to counter misinformation, and providing adequate resources and support to asylum seekers. Furthermore, measures must be taken to combat fraud and exploitation, holding accountable those who prey on vulnerable migrants. Ultimately, a more transparent, efficient, and humane approach to migration is essential to uphold the rights and dignity of those seeking refuge in Mexico.
