Menhaden Fishery Stakeholders Request ASMFC Review Based on Scientific Data

Menhaden Fishermen Challenge Environmentalists’ Claims, Advocate for Livelihoods at ASMFC Meeting

REEDVILLE, VA – A coalition of menhaden fishermen, represented by six shop stewards from the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 400, have directly addressed the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) Menhaden Management Board, urging them to prioritize the livelihoods of Virginia watermen and dismiss what they term "misinformation" disseminated by environmental groups. The fishermen’s plea comes amidst a scheduled debate at the ASMFC’s 2025 Spring Meeting concerning the management of menhaden, a small, oily fish crucial to both the ecosystem and the fishing industry. The Menhaden Fisheries Coalition (MFC) has publicly backed the fishermen’s concerns, highlighting the importance of their voices in the ongoing discourse.

The central contention of the fishermen revolves around the narrative presented by some environmental organizations, which they argue misrepresents the health of the menhaden population and the impact of fishing practices. The fishermen contend that the science utilized by the ASMFC does not adequately reflect the abundance of menhaden in the Chesapeake Bay and other waters. They assert that stringent regulations based on flawed data threaten their economic survival, jeopardizing the jobs and heritage of generations of watermen. The letter underscores the socio-economic contributions of the menhaden fishery to Virginia’s coastal communities, emphasizing the need for balanced management that respects both ecological sustainability and economic viability.

The fishermen’s letter specifically calls on the ASMFC to critically evaluate the scientific basis of proposed regulations, emphasizing the importance of incorporating local ecological knowledge and the experiences of those directly involved in the fishery. They highlight the economic ripple effects of reduced fishing quotas, stressing the potential devastation to families, businesses, and entire communities that depend on the menhaden industry. The MFC echoes these sentiments, advocating for a transparent and collaborative management approach that values the input of fishermen and acknowledges the real-world consequences of regulatory decisions.

The debate over menhaden management has become increasingly polarized, with environmental groups advocating for stricter catch limits to protect the species’ role in the food web, serving as a vital food source for larger fish, marine mammals, and birds. They express concern about the potential depletion of menhaden stocks and the cascading effects on the wider ecosystem. Meanwhile, the fishing industry emphasizes the economic significance of the fishery and argues for a management approach that recognizes the fluctuating nature of fish populations and allows for sustainable harvesting without undue hardship on fishing communities.

The ASMFC faces the challenging task of balancing these competing interests, seeking a solution that ensures the long-term health of the menhaden population while also safeguarding the livelihoods of those who depend on the fishery. The fishermen’s letter and the MFC’s support underscore the urgency of this issue and the need for a comprehensive and inclusive approach to menhaden management. They urge the ASMFC to engage in meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders, including fishermen, scientists, and environmental groups, to arrive at a solution that respects both ecological and economic considerations.

The outcome of the ASMFC’s deliberations will have significant implications for the future of the menhaden fishery and the coastal communities that rely on it. The fishermen’s plea for a balanced approach, grounded in sound science and respectful of their livelihood, highlights the human dimension of fisheries management and the importance of considering the socio-economic impacts of regulatory decisions. As the debate continues, the ASMFC’s challenge remains to find a path that ensures the sustainability of both the menhaden resource and the communities that depend on it.
