Malaysian Ministry Reports Removal of Over 40,000 AI-Generated Disinformation Posts in Three Years

Malaysia Combats Deluge of AI-Generated Disinformation, Removing Over 40,000 Malicious Posts

PETALING JAYA – In the ongoing battle against the proliferation of online disinformation, Malaysia has achieved a significant milestone, removing over 40,000 pieces of AI-generated malicious content from social media platforms within the past three years. This revelation comes from the Communications Ministry, underscoring the nation’s commitment to curbing the spread of fabricated information, including the increasingly sophisticated deepfake investment scams. The ministry’s data, compiled by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), reveals a staggering 41,394 AI-created disinformation posts taken down between January 1, 2022, and August 15, 2025. This figure includes 1,005 deepfake investment scam postings, highlighting the growing threat posed by AI-manipulated media in financial fraud.

The removal process involves a collaborative effort between the Malaysian government and social media platforms. While the MCMC formally requests the takedown of identified malicious content, the ultimate decision rests with each platform’s individual community guidelines and their adherence to Malaysian law. This collaborative approach acknowledges the global nature of online content dissemination and the need for shared responsibility in tackling disinformation. The ministry emphasized its ongoing collaboration with both social media companies and law enforcement agencies to effectively combat the spread of AI-generated falsehoods, reaffirming its commitment to a multi-pronged strategy.

The scourge of online disinformation is not limited to AI-generated content, and the Malaysian government recognizes the need for a broader approach to online safety. To this end, the Communications Ministry is laying the groundwork for an Online Safety Committee. This advisory body, to be managed by the Law Ministry, will play a crucial role in providing recommendations to the MCMC on a wide range of online safety issues. The establishment of such a committee signifies a proactive step towards a more comprehensive framework for online safety governance.

In addition to the Online Safety Committee, the ministry is exploring the implementation of mandatory content labeling for AI-generated content. This initiative aims to empower users with the ability to readily identify potentially misleading, manipulative, or inaccurate information. By providing clear labels for AI-generated content, users can make informed judgments about the information they encounter online, mitigating the risks associated with the spread of misinformation and harmful content. This proactive measure aligns with global efforts to enhance online transparency and user awareness.

The government’s efforts to combat disinformation come in response to a parliamentary inquiry by Jalaluddin Alias, who sought clarification on the measures being taken to control the production of misleading or fake AI content in Malaysia. The ministry’s detailed response underscores the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in its efforts to address this pressing issue. The escalating use of AI in creating deceptive content necessitates a proactive and multifaceted approach, and Malaysia’s efforts demonstrate a determined pursuit of online safety and integrity.

The pervasiveness of AI-generated disinformation poses a multifaceted challenge, threatening not only individual users but also national security and economic stability. Deepfake technology, in particular, has emerged as a potent tool for creating highly convincing yet entirely fabricated videos and audio recordings, opening up new avenues for fraud, manipulation, and reputational damage. Malaysia’s proactive efforts to combat this threat reflect a growing global awareness of the need to address the ethical and societal implications of rapidly advancing AI technology. The measures being implemented represent a significant step towards creating a safer and more trustworthy online environment, recognizing that the fight against disinformation requires a concerted and ongoing effort.
