Social Media Fuels Panic at University of Wilmington Amidst Unverified Gun Threat

Wilmington, NC – A wave of fear and uncertainty swept through the University of Wilmington (UNCW) campus on Thursday night, triggered by a viral video depicting a man carrying a gun in a parking garage. The unverified footage sparked a swift shelter-in-place order, mobilizing a multi-agency response involving the Wilmington Police Department, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, and State Police. While the university later confirmed there was no active threat, the incident underscored the pervasive influence of social media in amplifying anxieties and potentially jeopardizing public safety. The video, which reportedly circulated on other college campuses as well, raised serious concerns about the spread of misinformation and the crucial need for responsible social media usage in times of potential crisis.

The incident at UNCW highlights the challenges law enforcement faces in navigating the digital age, where rumors and unverified information can rapidly escalate into widespread panic. New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon, while not commenting directly on the UNCW incident, emphasized the importance of treating all social media threats seriously until proven otherwise. He underscored the delicate balance between leveraging social media as an investigative tool and mitigating its potential to spread misinformation and obstruct law enforcement efforts.

“If something comes through social media, we have to treat it as real until we can verify otherwise,” Sheriff McMahon stated, emphasizing the critical role of verification in responding to online threats. He stressed that while social media can be a valuable resource for gathering information and identifying potential threats, its misuse can create unnecessary panic and hinder investigations. The rapid dissemination of unverified information can divert resources away from legitimate threats and create confusion, jeopardizing public safety.

The sheriff warned against the dangers of blindly sharing and reposting potentially false information, emphasizing the individual responsibility of social media users in preventing the spread of misinformation. “If you see something that comes through social media, we absolutely want you to send it in to tell us, but reposting it to everybody? It’s not necessarily going to be the right thing to do.” He cautioned that sharing unverified content can amplify anxieties, create unnecessary chaos, and obstruct law enforcement efforts.

Sheriff McMahon urged the public to exercise caution and critical thinking when encountering potentially alarming content online. “If you’re reposting things that you don’t know are accurate… a lot of them are lies, a lot of them are…are untrue…people making things up,” he explained. He emphasized the importance of pausing and verifying information before sharing it, recognizing the potential consequences of spreading misinformation. “If you’re reposting that and putting it out there…then you’re creating more chaos, more drama.” He advised individuals to report any concerning photos or videos directly to law enforcement agencies, allowing trained professionals to assess the situation and take appropriate action.

The UNCW incident serves as a stark reminder of the power and potential pitfalls of social media in the 21st century. While it can be a valuable tool for communication and information sharing, its ability to rapidly disseminate information also makes it a breeding ground for rumors and misinformation. The incident underscores the crucial need for responsible social media usage, critical thinking, and collaboration between the public and law enforcement to ensure public safety and prevent the spread of unnecessary panic. In an era defined by instant communication and widespread information access, the responsibility to verify and critically evaluate online content rests with each individual, preventing the amplification of fear and misinformation. The message is clear: think before you post.
