Southern University Remains on Lockdown After Racist Email Threat Triggers Campus-Wide Evacuation

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – The campus of Southern University remains eerily quiet following a campus-wide lockdown and evacuation prompted by a racist email threat on Thursday. The university implemented emergency protocols, urging students to shelter in place before ultimately evacuating the campus. Only residential students and essential personnel are currently permitted on campus, with all classes and activities suspended through the weekend. The extended closure reflects the university’s commitment to prioritizing student safety while investigations into the threat continue.

The email, which contained a chilling promise to “shoot every Black person I see,” was reportedly sent to at least six Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), including Southern University. This incident is the latest in a string of threats targeting HBCUs across the nation, raising serious concerns about the safety and security of these institutions and their students. The FBI is working in conjunction with local law enforcement to determine the source of the email and bring those responsible to justice.

While Southern University’s swift response to the threat was largely commended by students, the lack of readily available information during the initial hours of the lockdown fueled anxieties and contributed to the spread of misinformation. Students like Sophomore Malik Jackson recounted the fear and uncertainty that permeated the campus as rumors swirled in the absence of official updates. The pervasive sense of vulnerability underscored the need for clear and timely communication during such emergencies.

Adding to the confusion was a separate incident involving a man observed at the university’s law school over the weekend. The man reportedly engaged in unsettling conversations, asking individuals about their beliefs regarding the afterlife. A photograph of the man circulated on social media, further amplifying student concerns. The WBRZ Investigative Unit witnessed the Baton Rouge Police Department and the FBI locating and questioning the individual. Authorities determined that, while his behavior was deemed suspicious, he was not connected to the email threat and posed no immediate danger to the campus community.

The ongoing investigation into the email threat is a top priority for law enforcement agencies. The FBI, recognizing the gravity of the situation and its impact on HBCUs nationwide, is actively pursuing leads and leveraging its resources to identify the perpetrator. The incident highlights the pervasive nature of racial hatred and the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect vulnerable communities.

The extended campus closure at Southern University allows for a thorough assessment of security protocols and provides students and staff with time to process the emotional impact of the threat. The university is offering counseling services to support those affected by this unsettling incident. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of the entire Southern University community and preventing future occurrences of this nature. The return to normalcy will be carefully managed, with a renewed emphasis on vigilance and preparedness.
