Southern University Remains on Lockdown Following Racist Email Threat, Heightening Security Concerns at HBCUs

BATON ROUGE, LA – Southern University’s campus remains eerily quiet following a campus-wide lockdown and evacuation prompted by a racially charged email threat. The university initiated the lockdown Thursday morning after receiving an email threatening violence against Black individuals. This email, later determined to be part of a series targeting at least five other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), has sparked widespread concern and heightened security measures across the affected institutions. Currently, access to the Southern University campus is restricted to residential students and essential personnel, with all classes and activities cancelled through the weekend. The extended closure reflects the university’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of its community while investigations continue.

The threatening email, which claimed the sender would “shoot every Black person they see,” triggered an immediate and comprehensive response from Southern University. Students and staff were instructed to shelter in place as authorities assessed the situation. While the swift action was lauded by many, some students expressed frustration over the lack of clear and timely communication from the university, which they say contributed to the spread of misinformation and amplified anxiety on campus. Malik Jackson, a sophomore at Southern, recounted the fear and uncertainty he experienced: “That added to the scary aspect. We don’t know where this supposed threat is. We don’t know what the supposed threat is. All we know is you’re in immediate danger if you’re on campus, which I was.”

Further complicating the situation was a social media post circulating on Facebook depicting a man at the Southern University Law Center over the weekend. The post claimed the man had been asking individuals about their beliefs concerning the afterlife. The WBRZ Investigative Unit witnessed Baton Rouge Police and the FBI locating and questioning the man in the photograph. According to BRPD, while the man’s behavior was considered “suspicious,” investigators determined he posed no credible threat and was not connected to the email. This incident, though unrelated, underscores the heightened sense of vulnerability and unease permeating the campus in the wake of the threat.

As of Friday afternoon, the investigation into the origin of the email threat remains ongoing. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are working diligently to identify and apprehend the individual responsible. The incident has not only disrupted campus life but also raised broader concerns about the safety and security of HBCUs across the nation. This is not an isolated event, as several HBCUs have been targeted with similar threats in recent months, highlighting the persistent challenges these institutions face in ensuring the safety and security of their predominantly Black student bodies.

The extended campus closure at Southern University allows for a thorough assessment of security protocols and the implementation of any necessary enhancements. The university is working in close collaboration with law enforcement to provide updates to the campus community and ensure a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, and staff upon their return. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures to address potential threats to HBCUs and their communities.

The investigation into this threat comes at a time of heightened sensitivity to issues of race and safety on college campuses nationwide. The targeting of HBCUs with these types of threats evokes a painful history of violence and discrimination against Black educational institutions. The resilience and determination of these institutions to persevere in the face of such adversity is commendable. Moving forward, fostering a sense of community, strengthening security measures, and promoting open communication will be crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff at HBCUs. The pursuit of justice for those responsible for these threats is paramount, sending a clear message that such acts of intimidation and hatred will not be tolerated. The broader community must stand in solidarity with HBCUs and support their efforts to create safe and inclusive learning environments for all.
