Kyiv to Host EU Disinformation Debunking Workshop Amidst Escalating Information Warfare

Kyiv, Ukraine – As disinformation campaigns surrounding the European Union and its support for Ukraine escalate, the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine is taking proactive steps to bolster the nation’s defenses in the information war. A two-day capacity-building workshop titled “Debunking disinformation on the European Union and the EU’s support to Ukraine: Fact-checking Workshop” is scheduled for June 5th and 6th in Kyiv, targeting journalists, educators, and civil society activists. This intensive training program aims to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge to identify, analyze, and counter disinformation narratives, particularly those exploiting the sensitive topics of European integration and EU aid to Ukraine. The workshop signifies a critical investment in strengthening information resilience within Ukraine, recognizing the pivotal role of accurate and trustworthy information in a democratic society under pressure.

The workshop arrives at a crucial juncture, as Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine is accompanied by a relentless barrage of disinformation designed to undermine public trust, sow discord, and manipulate public opinion both within Ukraine and internationally. The Kremlin’s propaganda machine has consistently targeted the EU’s relationship with Ukraine, portraying the EU as unreliable, manipulative, or even hostile. These false narratives seek to erode support for Ukraine’s European integration aspirations and weaken the resolve of the international community in providing assistance. By empowering journalists, educators, and civil society activists with fact-checking tools and techniques, the EU Delegation aims to create a robust network of informed individuals capable of effectively challenging and debunking these harmful narratives.

The intensive training program will delve into the mechanics of disinformation campaigns, dissecting the tactics and strategies employed by propagandists to spread misleading information. Expert speakers will provide insights into how Russian propaganda specifically exploits the themes of European integration and EU support, highlighting the vulnerabilities and manipulative techniques used to sway public perception. Svitlana Slipchenko, Deputy Executive Director of Vox Ukraine, and Dzvenyslava Shcherba, journalist and analyst at Internews Ukraine, will lead the workshop, bringing their extensive experience in media analysis and disinformation research to the forefront. Participants will benefit from their expertise in identifying manipulative narratives, verifying information sources, and effectively communicating accurate information to wider audiences.

A key component of the workshop will focus on practical skill development, equipping participants with the tools and techniques necessary to verify information and expose disinformation. Specialized tools and resources for fact-checking will be introduced and explained, empowering participants to critically analyze information sources, identify inconsistencies, and trace the origins of misleading narratives. This hands-on training will enhance their ability to debunk false claims and disseminate accurate information within their respective communities. The workshop is not only about individual skill development, but also about fostering collaboration and networking among participants. The event provides a valuable opportunity for like-minded individuals to connect, share experiences, and explore potential joint projects aimed at combating disinformation.

The collaborative aspect of the workshop is particularly important in building a strong and unified front against disinformation. By connecting journalists, educators, and civil society activists, the EU Delegation seeks to foster a network of informed individuals capable of sharing information, supporting each other’s work, and collectively amplifying their voices against disinformation. This collaborative approach recognizes that combating information manipulation requires a concerted effort from multiple stakeholders working together.

The deadline for registration is May 29th at 8:00 PM, with selected participants receiving detailed information and the agenda by email on May 30th. This limited timeframe underscores the urgency of the situation and the EU’s commitment to rapidly equipping Ukrainian information professionals with the necessary skills to counter disinformation narratives. The workshop is a crucial step in bolstering Ukraine’s information resilience and empowering its citizens to navigate the complex information landscape effectively. By investing in the capacity of journalists, educators, and civil society activists, the EU is contributing to a more informed and resilient Ukraine, capable of withstanding the onslaught of disinformation and upholding its democratic values.
