Kolkata Schools Emphasize Responsible Social Media Use Amidst National Security Concerns

Kolkata, [Date of Publication] – In response to heightened national security concerns, several schools in and around Kolkata have taken proactive measures to educate students and parents about the responsible use of social media. Principals have stressed the importance of verifying information before sharing and have cautioned against the spread of unverified messages and videos, particularly concerning sensitive topics related to national security. This comes as tensions and the potential for misinformation often escalate during periods of national security concerns. The schools are working to ensure that students understand the potential impact of their online activity and are equipped to navigate the digital landscape responsibly.

Recognizing the widespread use of social media among students, especially those in classes VIII to XII, schools have implemented various strategies to address the issue. These include parent-teacher meetings, special assemblies, advisories sent to students and posted in class groups, and counseling sessions focused on digital citizenship education. The common message being conveyed is the need for caution and critical thinking when encountering information online, particularly during times of heightened tension. The schools’ proactive approach aims to mitigate the risks associated with the rapid dissemination of misinformation.

St. Augustine’s Day School Shyamnagar held parent-teacher meetings last week to discuss the issue with parents and urge them to monitor their children’s social media activity. DPS Howrah conducted a special assembly before the summer break, advising students to exercise restraint on social media. Asian International School circulated a government video on preventive measures and cautioned against misinformation. The school also urged students to refrain from sharing any content related to army movements or similar sensitive information.

National English School, DPS Howrah, and St. Augustine’s Day School Shyamnagar emphasized the importance of verifying facts from trusted sources before sharing any information. Students were specifically instructed not to believe or forward any unverified content circulating on social media. The schools encouraged students to consult with adults to confirm the accuracy of information before sharing it online. This collaborative approach between schools, parents, and students is crucial in combating the spread of misinformation.

Rishi Aurobindo Memorial Academy underscored the potential consequences of sharing unverified videos related to sensitive topics, such as India-Pakistan tensions. They initiated counseling sessions to promote responsible social media use. Students were advised to think critically before sharing, consider the potential impact of their posts, and avoid inflammatory content. The school’s counseling service also provides digital citizenship education, equipping students with the skills and knowledge to navigate the online world responsibly.

The collective efforts of these Kolkata schools demonstrate a commitment to fostering responsible digital citizenship among students. By educating students and parents about the importance of verifying information and the potential consequences of sharing unverified content, these institutions are playing a vital role in ensuring a safe and responsible online environment. This proactive approach not only addresses the immediate concerns related to national security but also equips students with crucial skills for navigating the complexities of the digital age. The schools’ initiatives serve as a model for other educational institutions seeking to promote responsible social media use among their students.
