Karla Sofía Gascón’s Statement Regarding X Account Deactivation

Oscar-Nominated Actress Karla Sofía Gascón Deactivates X Account Amidst Controversy Over Past Tweets

Karla Sofía Gascón, the first openly transgender performer nominated for an acting Oscar, has deactivated her X (formerly Twitter) account following a tumultuous 24 hours sparked by the resurfacing of controversial past tweets. The tweets, which have since been deleted, contained commentary on sensitive topics including the 2020 murder of George Floyd, Muslim immigration in Spain, and religions perceived as conflicting with European values. The ensuing backlash has thrown Gascón’s Oscar campaign into disarray and forced Netflix, the distributor of her nominated film Emilia Pérez, into damage control mode.

Gascón, who shared the Best Actress award at Cannes for her portrayal of a transitioning cartel leader in Emilia Pérez, has been a vocal presence on social media. Her Oscar campaign, initially framed as a progressive celebration of transgender representation, has now been overshadowed by the controversy. The actress, who has used the mantra "Light will always triumph over darkness," has faced increasing online abuse and death threats, particularly from anti-trans groups, since her Cannes win. The resurfacing of these past tweets has significantly amplified the negative attention.

In a lengthy statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Gascón explained her decision to deactivate her X account, citing the intense harassment and death threats directed at her and her family. She expressed a desire to protect her daughter from the online vitriol. While acknowledging the inflammatory nature of some of her past opinions, she attributed them partly to the often-toxic environment of social media and described her account as a personal diary used to explore ideas and develop characters. She also hinted at a possible orchestrated effort to sabotage her Oscar chances.

Gascón apologized for any offense caused by her previous statements, emphasizing her support for minority groups and her opposition to racism, homophobia, and injustice. She acknowledged the potential for misinterpretation and maintained that her intent was never to cause harm. She also admitted to the possibility of past ignorance or errors in judgment, attributing her evolving perspectives to personal growth and experience.

The actress, who identifies as a Nichiren Buddhist, concluded her statement with the phrase "NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO," a mantra central to her faith. While expressing remorse for any hurt caused, she also conveyed a sense of resilience, asserting that the attacks against her would only strengthen her resolve. She further requested forgiveness for any past offensive words and reiterated her commitment to peace, love, and respect.

The controversy surrounding Gascón’s past tweets raises complex questions about the impact of social media on public figures, the evolution of personal opinions, and the potential for online scrutiny to derail careers. It also highlights the challenges faced by transgender individuals in the public eye, particularly in a climate of increasing anti-trans sentiment. The incident has undoubtedly complicated Gascón’s Oscar campaign and will likely continue to generate discussion and debate in the weeks leading up to the awards ceremony. The Academy, Netflix, and other stakeholders will be navigating a delicate situation as they grapple with the fallout from this controversy.
