Jaishankar Rejects Congress Accusations, Underscores National Unity Amidst Operation Sindoor Controversy

New Delhi – External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar vehemently denied allegations leveled by the Congress party regarding India’s Operation Sindoor, a military strike targeting terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan. During a parliamentary consultative committee meeting, Jaishankar categorically dismissed the claims that he had preemptively informed Pakistan about the operation, labeling them as "dishonest" and a gross "misrepresentation of events." He provided detailed clarifications to attending MPs on several key issues, including the role of the United States, the status of the Indus Water Treaty, and the precise sequence of events surrounding Operation Sindoor.

The controversy ignited after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi publicly accused Jaishankar of admitting to having forewarned Pakistan about the impending military action. Gandhi expressed deep concern about the potential compromise of national security arising from such a disclosure, questioning the number of Indian Air Force casualties that may have resulted. He cited a video clip purportedly showing Jaishankar stating that India had sent a message to Pakistan prior to the operation, informing them of the targeted strike on terrorist infrastructure while assuring them that the Pakistani military was not the target.

Jaishankar, backed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), refuted these accusations, asserting that the video clip was selectively edited and taken out of context. The MEA issued a strong rebuttal, characterizing the allegations as an "utter misrepresentation" of the minister’s statements. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) also conducted a fact-check of the video, confirming that Jaishankar made no such claims about prior notification to Pakistan. Jaishankar reiterated during the parliamentary meeting that the Pakistani DGMO was informed only after the operation’s successful completion, strictly adhering to established protocol.

The External Affairs Minister further clarified India’s rationale for the operation, emphasizing that the targeted strikes were meticulously planned to dismantle terrorist infrastructure while minimizing collateral damage. He underscored the operation’s success in delivering a significant blow to terrorist morale and capabilities. Addressing concerns raised by MPs about the operation’s impact on bilateral relations, Jaishankar highlighted India’s commitment to maintaining regional stability while resolutely combating terrorism.

During the meeting, Jaishankar also addressed questions regarding the United States’ involvement in the operation. He categorically stated that the US played no mediating role and that India maintained complete operational autonomy. He added that while the US had reached out for discussions, India explicitly stipulated that any communication on the matter would be conducted solely at the DGMO level.

The status of the Indus Water Treaty also emerged as a key point of discussion. MPs sought clarity on India’s intentions regarding the treaty, particularly in light of heightened tensions with Pakistan. Jaishankar clarified that the treaty is currently in a state of "abeyance," with no immediate plans to either resume full implementation or modify its existing terms. This signifies a cautious approach, balancing the need for water resource management with the complexities of the bilateral relationship.

The ongoing debate surrounding Operation Sindoor has generated significant political fallout, with opposition parties demanding greater transparency and further clarification from the government. The government, however, maintains its position that all actions taken were in accordance with established protocols and in the paramount interest of national security. The MEA has urged the public to rely on verified information and refrain from disseminating misinformation, emphasizing the need for responsible public discourse on sensitive national security matters.

Jaishankar concluded his address to the parliamentary committee by making a fervent appeal for national unity. He underscored the importance of projecting a unified front on the global stage, particularly as India continues to engage diplomatically with the international community on issues related to cross-border terrorism. He emphasized that a united and resolute stance is crucial for effectively addressing the complex challenges posed by terrorism and safeguarding India’s national interests. The government’s focus remains on ensuring national security while simultaneously pursuing peaceful and constructive engagement with its neighbors.
