Iranian Bot Network Exposed Targeting UK Democratic Processes

Iranian State-Sponsored Disinformation Campaign Targeting Scottish Independence Exposed

A sophisticated Iranian state-backed bot network aimed at manipulating online discussions surrounding Scottish independence has been uncovered by Cyabra, an AI-powered disinformation detection platform. Operating between May and June 2025, the campaign leveraged a network of fake accounts on X (formerly Twitter) to disseminate pro-independence, anti-Brexit, and anti-UK messaging, mimicking grassroots sentiment and attempting to sway public opinion towards a narrative favorable to Iranian interests. Cyabra’s analysis revealed that a significant portion, 26%, of the accounts participating in Scottish independence conversations were inauthentic, generating over 3,000 coordinated messages designed to amplify division within the UK.

The operation’s true nature was inadvertently revealed during a military escalation between Iran and Israel on June 13, 2025. The bot network abruptly ceased activity for 16 days, coinciding with the conflict. This sudden silence strongly suggested direct state control over the network. When the network reactivated, its messaging shifted, focusing on praising Iran’s military strength and mocking Western powers. This stark change in narrative further solidified the evidence of state-sponsored orchestration. The disruption, according to Cyabra CEO Dan Brahmy, provided a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a state-backed disinformation operation, effectively exposing its strategies, propaganda, and the extensive reach it had achieved, amassing 224 million views.

The Iranian network employed a range of sophisticated tactics to infiltrate legitimate online discussions. AI-generated personas were deployed, existing content was recycled, and strategic hashtags such as #ScottishIndependence, #FreeScotland, and #BrexitBetrayal were used to blend seamlessly into organic conversations and boost visibility. Cyabra’s platform, trained to recognize patterns associated with known Iranian influence operations, successfully traced these behaviors back to their source. A concerning element of the campaign was the unwitting amplification of the manipulated content by genuine users, blurring the lines between authentic discourse and engineered narratives, highlighting the insidious nature of such operations.

This discovery underscores the increasing sophistication and pervasiveness of state-sponsored disinformation campaigns in the digital age. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of online platforms to manipulation and the potential for external actors to exploit social and political divisions within democratic societies. The targeting of the Scottish independence debate highlights the strategic intent behind such operations, seeking to capitalize on existing tensions and further destabilize target countries.

Cyabra’s findings have significant implications for understanding the evolving landscape of information warfare. The ability of state actors to deploy sophisticated AI-powered tools to manipulate public opinion poses a serious challenge to democratic processes and national security. The incident highlights the crucial need for enhanced detection capabilities and countermeasures to combat these threats effectively. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of media literacy and critical thinking among online users to avoid inadvertently contributing to the spread of disinformation.

The revelation of this Iranian campaign comes as Cyabra prepares to merge with Trailblazer Merger Corporation I (NASDAQ: TBMC), a special-purpose acquisition company. This merger is expected to further enhance Cyabra’s capabilities and resources in combating disinformation. The company’s ongoing research and development into AI-powered detection technologies position it as a key player in the fight against online manipulation and the preservation of authentic online discourse. The full report on the Iranian bot network is available for download, offering a detailed analysis of the campaign and its implications. This information is crucial for policymakers, security experts, and the public alike in understanding and mitigating the risks posed by state-sponsored disinformation.
