UK Automotive Industry Tackles EV Misinformation with Updated Fact-Based Campaign

The UK automotive industry, led by Auto Trader in collaboration with ChargeUK and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), has reinforced its commitment to dispelling misinformation surrounding electric vehicles (EVs). The partnership has released an updated version of its initiative launched in November 2024, offering a comprehensive and data-driven overview of EV ownership and operation. This renewed effort seeks to provide clarity to consumers amid growing concerns and misconceptions about electric car adoption. The updated facts address key areas of consumer uncertainty, offering reassuring data points and highlighting the evolving EV landscape.

Key updates to the initiative include a recalculated potential annual savings figure, now estimated at £1,500 per year. This encompasses all running costs, including maintenance, insurance, and fuel, providing a more holistic view of EV ownership expenses. The data also reflects the continued expansion of the UK’s public charging infrastructure, with the total number of charge points now exceeding 80,998, including over 16,259 ultra-rapid chargers. This growth addresses concerns about range anxiety and charging accessibility, key barriers to EV adoption. Furthermore, the initiative highlights the narrowing price gap between electric and petrol cars, with the difference in upfront cost decreasing from 33% in 2024 to 22% in May 2025. Adding to the affordability aspect, there are now 33 brand new electric car models available with a recommended retail price under £30,000, offering consumers more budget-friendly options.

The initiative has also broadened its reach with the addition of new champions. The British Vehicle Rental Leasing Association (BVRLA), Cox Automotive Europe, and EV drivers’ association EVA England have joined Zapmap and the National Franchise Dealer Association in supporting the campaign, extending its dissemination to a wider audience of consumers and retailers. These organizations will play a critical role in amplifying the fact-based message, countering negative narratives and boosting consumer confidence in the transition to electric mobility.

The collaborative effort aims to debunk common myths surrounding EVs. The initiative provides clear evidence supporting the environmental benefits of electric cars, refutes claims about their increased fire risk compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, and showcases the improved range and charging infrastructure availability. The campaign seeks to present a balanced and evidence-based perspective, empowering consumers to make informed decisions based on facts rather than misinformation. The data provided is regularly reviewed and updated, ensuring accuracy and relevance in a rapidly evolving EV market. This commitment to transparency further strengthens the initiative’s credibility and underscores its commitment to providing reliable information.

Auto Trader’s latest data also reveals a growing confidence in the used EV market, with a significant increase in the number of retailers stocking electric vehicles. The number of independent retailers with at least one EV in stock has risen by nearly a quarter (24%), and 40% of all retailers now offer at least one electric vehicle option. This trend indicates a shift in market dynamics, with retailers recognizing the growing demand for used EVs and adapting their inventory accordingly. Despite lingering consumer hesitancy, data from EVA England reveals a high satisfaction rate among EV drivers, with 9 out of 10 expressing no regrets about their switch to electric. This positive feedback further strengthens the campaign’s message, highlighting the real-world benefits and satisfaction experienced by EV owners.

Government figures have also welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the supportive policies and investments driving the transition to electric mobility. Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting the EV transition, pointing to decreasing costs, improving range and expanding charging infrastructure. The government’s £4 billion investment aims to facilitate a smooth transition for both industry and drivers, supporting manufacturers, creating jobs, and making electric vehicles more accessible to the broader public. This commitment aligns with the government’s broader Plan for Change, fostering a sustainable and environmentally friendly transport sector.

Industry leaders have expressed strong support for the collaborative effort, highlighting the importance of clear communication and factual information in driving consumer confidence. Vicky Edmonds, CEO of EVA England, emphasized the association’s commitment to making EV adoption affordable and accessible, and sees the initiative as aligning with their mission to dispel myths and empower drivers with accurate information. Karoline Baumann of Cox Automotive Europe emphasized the crucial role of consumer confidence in the EV transition, highlighting the importance of tackling misinformation and providing clear facts to address consumer uncertainty. Toby Poston, Chief Executive of BVRLA, highlighted the significant role of the leasing and fleet sectors in driving the EV transition and the importance of empowering all drivers, regardless of their purchasing preference, to make the switch to electric. Erin Baker, Editorial Director at Auto Trader, expressed enthusiasm about the growing partnership and stressed the importance of industry collaboration in ensuring a smooth and confident transition to electric mobility for everyone. She also highlighted the positive trend of increasing affordability in the EV market, making electric cars accessible to a wider range of consumers.
