Journalists: The Gatekeepers of Truth and Democracy in the Digital Age

In a world awash in information, where misinformation and rumors spread like wildfire through digital channels, the role of journalists as purveyors of truth and guardians of democracy has never been more crucial. This was the central message delivered by Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farjana at a workshop on “Digital Journalism” organized by the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB) in Dhaka. The workshop, held on September 9, 2025, was specifically designed for journalists who sustained injuries during the tumultuous July Uprising. Farjana emphasized the power of journalism to counter misinformation, uphold democratic values, and shape a more informed and just society.

The July Uprising, a pivotal moment in the nation’s history, witnessed journalists bravely reporting from the frontlines, often at great personal risk. Many were injured, some lost limbs or eyesight, and others made the ultimate sacrifice. Farjana acknowledged their courage and dedication, stating that the time had come to repay this “blood debt.” The lessons learned from the uprising, she emphasized, transcend political affiliations and personal opinions. The core message, she stated, is the unwavering commitment to truth and the refusal to bow down to pressure or manipulation. Journalists, she urged, must take an oath to serve the nation by upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity and fighting against the insidious forces of misinformation and rumor.

Farjana’s call to action resonated deeply with the audience, composed of journalists who had experienced firsthand the dangers and challenges of reporting in a volatile environment. She highlighted the importance of equipping journalists with the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of the digital landscape. Training in modern techniques of photography, videography, editing, and mobile journalism, she argued, are essential tools for effectively capturing and disseminating information in the digital age. Reflecting on the July Uprising, she noted that it was often the raw power of images and videos, rather than written words, that most profoundly impacted public perception and galvanized action.

PIB Director General Faruk Wasif, who presided over the workshop, echoed Farjana’s sentiments, emphasizing the vital role of journalists not only as disseminators of information but also as frontline defenders against fascism. Wasif stressed that journalists have a fundamental responsibility to speak truth to power, regardless of the potential consequences. If journalists fail to uphold this duty, he warned, society risks descending into silence and oppression. He underscored the importance of journalists at all levels, from small towns to major cities, in contributing to a more informed and democratic society.

The workshop served as a powerful reminder of the critical role journalists play in safeguarding democratic values. In an era characterized by the rapid spread of misinformation and the erosion of trust in traditional media, journalists must embrace their role as gatekeepers of truth and hold themselves to the highest ethical standards. By providing accurate and reliable information, journalists empower citizens to make informed decisions and participate fully in the democratic process. The workshop also highlighted the need for ongoing training and support for journalists, particularly those working in challenging or dangerous environments. Equipping journalists with the necessary skills and resources is essential for ensuring that they can effectively fulfill their vital role in society.

The emphasis on digital journalism skills reflects the changing media landscape and the increasing importance of digital platforms for news consumption. Journalists must be adept at utilizing these platforms to reach wider audiences and counter the spread of misinformation. This includes not only mastering technical skills but also developing critical thinking abilities to identify and debunk false narratives. The workshop’s focus on journalists injured during the July Uprising underscores the importance of recognizing and supporting those who have risked their lives in pursuit of truth and transparency. Their sacrifices serve as a powerful reminder of the vital role journalists play in upholding democratic values and holding those in power accountable. The workshop’s call for a renewed commitment to truth and accuracy in journalism is a timely and essential reminder of the importance of a free and independent press in a healthy democracy.
