Government Dismisses Spate of Fake News Targeting India’s National Security and Communal Harmony

New Delhi – The Indian government has launched a robust counter-offensive against a wave of disinformation circulating on social media, categorically debunking several fabricated claims aimed at inciting communal tensions and undermining national security. These false narratives range from fictitious drone attacks on religious sites to fabricated military incidents and infrastructure sabotage. The government’s swift and decisive action underscores its commitment to combating misinformation and maintaining public order in the face of malicious online campaigns.

One of the most egregious falsehoods targeted the revered Nankana Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan, the birthplace of Sikhism’s founder, Guru Nanak. A video circulating online falsely alleged that India had launched a drone attack on the sacred site. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check Unit, the government’s official fact-checking arm, immediately flagged the video as "completely fake," emphasizing that such content was deliberately disseminated to sow discord and inflame communal tensions within India. The government condemned the malicious attempt to exploit religious sentiments for nefarious purposes.

Furthermore, the government dismissed social media posts asserting the capture of an Indian Air Force pilot, including a female officer, in Pakistan, following an alleged ejection over Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). These claims, designed to create anxiety and project an image of Indian military vulnerability, were swiftly debunked. Similarly, false reports of a Pakistani cyberattack crippling India’s power grid and disruptions to the crucial Mumbai-Delhi air route were categorically refuted. The government clarified that the temporary closure of certain air traffic service (ATS) routes was due to operational reasons, unrelated to any alleged cyberattack. This rapid response effectively countered the spread of panic and maintained public confidence in critical infrastructure.

The government’s fact-checking efforts extended to addressing a manipulated video showing young men crying, falsely presented as Indian soldiers grieving. The PIB Fact Check Unit clarified that the video depicted students at a private defense coaching center celebrating their acceptance into the Indian Army, their emotional response stemming from joy and accomplishment. By exposing the fabricated narrative, the government prevented the misrepresentation of a positive event and preserved the dignity of the armed forces.

In a further display of its commitment to truth and accuracy, the government refuted international media reports alleging multiple explosions near the Srinagar and Jaipur airports. These claims, intended to create a sense of insecurity and instability, were promptly dismissed, with authorities urging reliance on official sources for authentic information. The rapid identification and debunking of these false narratives effectively neutralized their potential to spread panic or disrupt public order.

The government’s comprehensive and proactive approach to tackling misinformation highlights the increasing threat posed by fabricated content in the digital age. By swiftly exposing these falsehoods and providing accurate information, the government aims to safeguard national security, maintain communal harmony, and uphold public trust in official sources. The PIB Fact Check Unit continues to play a crucial role in verifying information and debunking false narratives, ensuring a more informed and resilient public discourse. The government’s commitment to fighting disinformation serves as a critical defense against malicious actors seeking to manipulate public opinion and sow discord within the country.
