The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has officially apprehended Akaninyene Udo, a resident of Akpautong in the Esit Eket Local Government Area, following his alleged involvement in spreading malicious misinformation. Operating under the Facebook alias “AK Philo,” Udo is accused of disseminating a fake security alert that ignited widespread panic throughout Eket and its surrounding communities. The arrest marks a decisive move by local authorities to curb the proliferation of digital threats that undermine the safety and stability of the region.
According to a press statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Timfon John, the arrest was the direct result of a thorough investigation into a viral social media post. The suspect had published a highly alarming message accompanied by a picture of an armed bandit, explicitly warning residents to “get ready” for an impending invasion by Boko Haram insurgents. The inflammatory nature of this content caught the attention of law enforcement agencies after it began circulating rapidly, creating significant distress and fear among the local population.
The police have clarified that the claims regarding an impending terrorist attack were entirely fabricated, serving no purpose other than to incite chaos and public disorder. Upon investigating the origin of the posts, law enforcement officials tracked the activity back to Udo’s digital profile. The Command has emphasized that the suspect was taken into custody to ensure he faces the full weight of the law, noting that preparations are currently underway to charge him in court for his role in disturbing the peace.
Beyond the apprehension of Udo, the police have indicated that the matter is far from closed. PPRO Timfon John stated that investigations are ongoing to identify and capture any accomplices who may have aided in the dissemination of the inciting content. By targeting not only the primary source but also potential facilitators of fake news, the Command aims to send a strong signal that the digital space in Akwa Ibom will not be allowed to serve as a platform for psychological warfare or the promotion of instability.
In an effort to restore public confidence, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has categorically dismissed the existence of any credible security threat within the region. Authorities have reassured residents that the state remains calm, stable, and firmly under control. Security agencies are maintaining a high level of vigilance and have deployed proactive measures across the state to safeguard lives and property, ensuring that the environment remains secure for all citizens despite the recent attempt to incite fear.
Closing the official statement, the Command urged members of the public to exercise greater discretion when consuming and sharing information on social media platforms. Residents were encouraged to verify all security-related alerts through official state channels and credible news sources before acting upon or circulating them. By promoting responsible digital citizenship, the police hope to prevent further instances of panic and maintain the continued peace, security, and stability of Akwa Ibom State against those who seek to disrupt it through misinformation.
