A pivotal two-day dialogue focused on bolstering electoral integrity has officially commenced in Kaduna, serving as a strategic platform for community leaders, civil society organizations, and media representatives from 12 states. The workshop, titled “Community Dialogues on Electoral Integrity – Trusted Voices for Credible Elections,” brings together 40 influential stakeholders from Nigeria’s North-West and North-Central zones. By fostering collaboration among these diverse groups, the initiative aims to establish grassroots strategies to proactively combat the pervasive threats of electoral violence, misinformation, and disinformation that have historically hindered the nation’s democratic processes.
The initiative is a significant component of the European Union Support to ECOWAS in Peace, Security and Governance (EPSG) Project. It is funded through a multi-national collaboration involving the European Union, Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). The technical implementation is steered by the Fundación para la Internacionalización de las Administraciones Públicas (FIAP), a Spanish organization dedicated to strengthening administrative capacities. This international backing underscores the shared commitment of global partners to support Nigeria’s democratic stability and enhance the credibility of its governance institutions.
Nurat Lawal, the Technical Advisor on Conflict Prevention for the EPSG Project, highlighted that the primary objective of the dialogue is to cultivate community-driven approaches that promote democratic accountability and public confidence. Throughout the event, participants are engaging in rigorous technical sessions and panel discussions that examine the intersection of electoral rights, civic duties, and the institutional roles of security agencies and traditional authorities. By facilitating an exchange of best practices, the dialogue empowers localized leaders to serve as catalysts for peace, reinforcing the importance of transparency and inclusive participation in upcoming electoral cycles.
A critical pillar of the workshop is the development of robust mechanisms to counter the digital and societal threats of hate speech and false information. Recognizing that misinformation can severely undermine the legitimacy of election outcomes, organisers have tasked participants with formulating practical, localized strategies to protect the integrity of the electoral process. Furthermore, the dialogue emphasizes the necessity of early warning mechanisms designed to identify and de-escalate potential election-related violence before it gains momentum, ensuring that community voices are equipped to act as first responders to instability.
The project further stresses the imperative of gender and youth inclusivity as a cornerstone of a resilient democracy. By advocating for the increased participation of women and young people in democratic governance, the dialogue seeks to create a more representative political landscape. Representatives from FIAP and project partners reaffirmed that credible elections are inextricably linked to long-term regional development and political stability. They argued that empowering “trusted voices” at the community level is the most effective defense against electoral conflict, ultimately transforming passive citizens into active, informed participants in the democratic journey.
As the two-day programme concludes, participants are set to finalize community-based action plans and issue a comprehensive communiqué containing strategic recommendations for systemic improvement. Attendees have already pledged to return to their communities as ambassadors of electoral integrity, committed to promoting fact-based discourse and fostering trust in democratic institutions. Organisers remain optimistic that this grassroots-led coalition will not only act as a safeguard against electoral malpractice but will also contribute meaningfully to the institutionalization of peaceful, inclusive, and transparent polls across Nigeria.
