A sophisticated and large-scale disinformation campaign is currently sweeping across major social media platforms, specifically targeting Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi, the newly appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to official reports from the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD), an agency under Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, the digital landscape has been inundated with a deluge of fabricated narratives, manipulative content, and unverified rumors aimed at undermining the integrity of Ukraine’s primary military leadership.

The machinery behind this operation relies heavily on coordinated bot networks designed to amplify false claims and inject chaos into the public discourse. Among the primary falsehoods being disseminated are stories of alleged intense infighting among Ukraine’s top brass, including claims that disputes between generals had escalated into physical confrontations. Furthermore, the disinformation network is actively circulating fictitious administrative reports, such as rumors regarding “unprecedented” military audits, the immediate disbandment of Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Centers (TCRSCs), and the forced deployment of all recruitment personnel to the front lines.

Ukrainian authorities view this effort as a calculated strategic objective intended to erode public trust in the military establishment. By manufacturing domestic friction, these actors aim to create artificial divisions within the Defense Forces, weakening the internal cohesion of the country during a period of high-stakes conflict. The CCD explicitly warned that the goal of these coordinated campaigns is to sow discord and provoke panic, serving the interests of hostile entities attempting to destabilize Ukraine from within by creating a facade of institutional failure.

Beyond the spread of institutional disinformation, attackers are employing identity theft on a granular level. Numerous fake social media accounts, particularly on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), have been created to impersonate Major General Drapatyi himself. By fabricating statements and attributing them to the Commander-in-Chief, the campaign seeks to manipulate public expectations, promising unrealistic outcomes or shifts in military strategy. Once these false expectations are established, the orchestrators plan to use them as a foundation to later discredit the official for failing to fulfill the fabricated promises.

General Staff spokesperson Dmytro Lykhovii has confirmed that these coordinated digital attacks are not accidental or isolated incidents, but rather components of a deliberate, sustained information operation. The sheer volume of fake announcements regarding the General’s decision-making process points to a professionalized campaign designed to distort reality and weaken the strategic position of the Ukrainian military’s leadership. The operation underscores the evolving nature of hybrid warfare, wherein the digital battlefield is used to neutralize the effectiveness of military commanders by attacking their reputation and the public’s perception of their command.

As the situation develops, Ukrainian authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and to rely exclusively on official, verified sources for information regarding the Armed Forces. The CCD’s disclosure serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of the information ecosystem to state-sponsored manipulation. By proactively identifying and flagging this campaign, Kyiv is attempting to insulate the population from psychological operations, emphasizing that the integrity of the Armed Forces remains a vital front in the broader effort to protect national security.
