Women navigating the transition of menopause are being urged to exercise extreme caution regarding where they source their health information. During a recent seminar co-hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO), global experts emphasized that the proliferation of “influencer” culture on social media has created a dangerous landscape of misinformation. Health professionals are now calling on women to prioritize evidence-based medical guidelines over viral trends, warning that the pressure to maintain an image of eternal youth often leads to the consumption of products and treatments that lack scientific backing.
Dr. Nicole Jaff, a South African academic and certified menopause practitioner, underscored that while menopause research is currently experiencing a historic peak, the surge in data has been accompanied by a surge in falsehoods. Dr. Jaff argued that women are being misled by unqualified voices who peddle unverified advice, complicating the experiences of those struggling with legitimate symptoms like “brain fog.” She encouraged both patients and healthcare providers to consult the official, peer-reviewed guidelines issued by the International Menopause Society, which are available to the public for free, rather than relying on social media algorithms.
A significant portion of the seminar addressed the complex relationship between menopause and cognitive health. Aimee Spector, a professor of clinical psychology of ageing at University College London, specifically addressed the rampant confusion surrounding Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and its potential link to dementia. She noted that misinformation in this area is particularly pervasive, with some claims suggesting HRT is a preventative measure against cognitive decline, while others warn of increased risks. According to Professor Spector, even medical professionals are struggling to interpret the fragmented data, leading to inconsistent advice being passed down to patients.
To bring clarity to the discourse, Professor Spector detailed a recent international research project commissioned by the WHO, which included collaboration from the Global Brain Health Institute at Trinity College Dublin. After reviewing the existing body of published studies, the researchers reached a sobering conclusion: the current quality of evidence is alarmingly low. Most of the studies analyzed were observational, making it impossible to definitively link hormone therapy to changes in dementia risk. The team concluded that there is currently “insufficient evidence” to support either side of the debate.
Consequently, the medical consensus remains clear: HRT should be utilized strictly for the management of menopause symptoms rather than as a tool for neurological protection. Professor Spector cautioned against using dementia risk as a primary factor in the decision-making process for hormone therapy, as the science simply does not yet support that application. She stressed that while HRT is highly effective for addressing hot flashes, mood swings, and other physical symptoms, it should not be marketed or consumed as a preventative treatment for long-term cognitive health.
The seminar, which forms part of a broader WHO initiative to streamline global health communication, concluded with a call for greater transparency and scientific rigor. Experts are optimistic, however, regarding new non-hormonal treatment options that are becoming available. These advancements offer vital relief for women who have historically been unable to use traditional hormone therapies due to underlying health conditions, such as breast cancer. Ultimately, the event served as a firm reminder that in the face of widespread digital noise, evidence-based medicine remains the only safe compass for women’s health.
