In a landscape dominated by the rapid spread of digital misinformation, 16-year-old Rareș Oancea from Iași has emerged as an unexpected leader in the fight for truth. Driven by the alarming ease with which his compatriots accepted falsehoods during the 2024 presidential elections, the high school student developed “Truth Seeker,” an AI-driven platform designed to fact-check online content. Disturbed by seeing real, everyday people—not just automated bots—blindly sharing extremist propaganda and historical revisionism, Oancea felt compelled to act, using his programming skills to intervene where current digital discourse had failed.
Oancea’s initiative was sparked by a wave of inflammatory posts characterizing controversial figures as saviors while promoting long-discredited ideologies. Drawing on his lifelong interest in history and his proactive research into current affairs, he realized that the susceptibility of the public was grounded in a dangerous lack of critical engagement with information. As he deepened his research into political processes and hybrid warfare, he realized that if he wanted to counter the proliferation of malicious narratives, he would need to build a tool that could hold digital content to a standard of objective, evidence-based verification.
The development of the platform has been a lean, iterative process. While currently in its functional development stage, Truth Seeker utilizes a bespoke database of trusted sources to compare claims across articles, photos, and videos. Unlike generic AI chatbots, which often hallucinate or struggle with context, Oancea’s system analyzes specific frames of clips and fragments of images, performing reverse-searches to identify original, unedited versions of media. This technical rigor was recently demonstrated when the platform successfully debunked a viral video that falsely accused soldiers of aggression, proving instead that they were acting humanely.
Looking toward the future, Oancea acknowledges that his project requires greater resources to achieve its full potential. He aims to secure partnerships with prestigious research organizations to gain access to comprehensive data libraries, which would allow for more sophisticated analysis of language and trends in social media discourse. Currently, he is focused on expanding the platform’s accessibility by developing a mobile application and a browser extension, ensuring that users can verify information in real-time as they browse the web.
