The urgent need for this initiative stems from extensive research commissioned by City Hall, which uncovered a sophisticated ecosystem of misinformation targeting the city. The findings revealed that anti-immigration and anti-Islam narratives, often originating in English, are being systematically translated and amplified by accounts in Japan and China. Furthermore, the report identified a alarming trend of “fake news” operations, including verified accounts posing as legitimate media outlets and the use of AI-generated imagery.
