The International Organisation for Press and Media, headquartered in the Netherlands, has officially announced the launch of the International Centre for Combating Media Disinformation (ICCMD). As the first independent, non-profit international Arab entity of its kind, the centre marks a significant milestone in the global effort to confront the escalating crisis of misinformation. By establishing a dedicated hub for media integrity, the organization aims to safeguard the digital information ecosystem against the corrosive effects of fabricated content and deceptive narratives.

The leadership of this landmark initiative will be spearheaded by Isa Al Shaiji, the chairman of the Bahrain Journalists’ Association. Mr. Al Shaiji’s appointment underscores the center’s commitment to professional rigor and regional expertise. Under his guidance, the ICCMD is poised to operate as a pivotal authority, focusing on the development of structural solutions designed to counter the spread of disinformation and to promote a standardized culture of fact-checking across various media landscapes.

Secretary-General of the parent organization, Sultan Al Housani, emphasized that the ICCMD is designed to function as a collaborative international platform. By bridging the gap between Arab media professionals and their international counterparts, the centre aims to harmonize efforts in developing robust research and professional standards. Al Housani noted that a primary objective is to enhance institutional capacity, fostering a climate of cooperation that brings together media organizations, prestigious academic institutions, and specialized research centers to combat the complexities of the digital age.

The governance of the ICCMD is anchored by a distinguished board of directors, comprising prominent media leaders from across the Arab world, including representatives from Bahrain, Morocco, Oman, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait. This diverse leadership team ensures that the center remains sensitive to regional nuances while maintaining a global perspective. The inclusion of such a broad spectrum of expertise reflects the center’s ambition to create a unified and informed response to the challenges of misinformation that transcend national borders.

Reflecting on the strategic priorities of the institution, Mr. Al Shaiji outlined a comprehensive roadmap for the ICCMD. He highlighted that the centre will prioritize the creation of evidence-based professional solutions, the production of in-depth research and studies, and the delivery of specialized training programs for media practitioners. These initiatives are intended to equip journalists and media workers with the necessary tools to navigate an increasingly complex information environment, ensuring they can effectively verify content before it reaches the public.

Ultimately, the ICCMD seeks to restore and solidify public trust in the media through the establishment of strategic regional and international partnerships. By fostering a deep-rooted culture of verification, the centre aims to build a resilient media environment where facts are prioritized over sensationalism. Through these combined efforts, the International Centre for Combating Media Disinformation aspires to set a new global benchmark for transparency and integrity, ensuring that media content remains a reliable pillar of informed democratic societies.
