Maharashtra Cyber Uncovers Massive Disinformation Network Amidst CJP Protests
Maharashtra Cyber has launched a high-level investigation into a sophisticated disinformation campaign that emerged during the recent Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests. Following a large-scale rally at Shivaji Park, which saw approximately 20,000 attendees gathered to celebrate the resignation of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, authorities detected a coordinated effort to manipulate public sentiment. Officials stated that the campaign was designed to sow discord, amplify social unrest, and deliberately confuse the public regarding the motives and intensity of the demonstration.
The investigative unit has identified a staggering 429 individual social media posts and profile handles across major platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. According to a senior police official, the breadth of the operation indicates a high level of organization. Of particular concern to security agencies is the discovery that roughly 100 of these accounts are being operated from foreign soil, pointing to an external dimension in what was intended to appear as a domestic political expression.
Technological sophistication served as a hallmark of this disinformation effort, with Maharashtra Cyber reporting that over 140 of the compromised posts utilized artificial intelligence. Utilizing the agency’s advanced audio-video forensic tools, investigators confirmed the use of AI to create synthetic media, including cloned audio, manipulated video footage attributed to public figures, and digitally inflated visuals of the protest crowd sizes. These deceptive tactics were engineered to provide a false sense of scale and momentum to the CJP demonstrations.
The investigation has linked a significant portion of this digital interference to elements operating from Pakistan and select Middle Eastern countries. These actors appear to have been instrumental in amplifying misleading narratives specifically targeted at Indian audiences to exacerbate existing political friction. By injecting AI-generated synthetic content into the local discourse, these offshore entities sought to cloud the objective reality of the weekend’s events and provoke unnecessary public alarm.
In direct response to these findings, Maharashtra Cyber has taken aggressive legal action to neutralize the threat. Officials have initiated the process of having the identified objectionable content removed through standardized requests to social media intermediaries. Furthermore, the agency is actively pursuing legal cases against the domestic handles involved in the dissemination of this content, aiming to dismantle the channels through which the disinformation was propagated to ensure that public order remains uncompromised.
Concurrently, the Mumbai Police have ramped up their ground operations, registering over 20 First Information Reports (FIRs) related to the protests. The legal crackdown has led to more than 1,000 young men and women being booked for their involvement, including several of the primary rally organizers. Police authorities indicated that they have begun issuing formal notices and summons to those identified, with a senior officer confirming that final decisions regarding further arrests and judicial action will be determined by the department’s top leadership in the coming days.
