In a significant move to reshape the digital discourse across Northern Nigeria, the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Enlightenment recently convened a strategic workshop in Kano. The event brought together over 100 prominent social media influencers for an intensive training session focused on professionalizing digital communication and enhancing public enlightenment. By engaging these influential voices, the administration aims to foster a more informed and balanced digital environment that reflects the realities of contemporary governance.
Addressing the participants, the Senior Special Assistant, Mr. Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, emphasized that the initiative was born out of a critical need to combat the rising tide of disinformation and misinformation. He pointed to the proliferation of AI-generated imagery, doctored videos, and deceptive clips that are frequently weaponized to sow discord and public confusion. Through this vocational training, the administration seeks to provide digital content creators with the analytical tools necessary to verify information before sharing, thereby sanitizing the online space for the benefit of all Nigerians.
Beyond the technical aspect of fact-checking, the workshop served as a proactive platform to synchronize the government’s vision with the public’s digital engagement. Mr. Abdulaziz highlighted that the administration is eager to keep influencers abreast of the “giant strides” and policy achievements of the Tinubu presidency. By providing direct access to accurate data, the government hopes that these influencers will become conduits for disseminating factual information, ultimately countering the skepticism that often thrives in the absence of transparency.

Dr. Musa Abdullahi-Sufi, a renowned development scholar, urged the influencers to pivot away from the prevalent culture of disseminating negative narratives, which he argued often undermines the country’s progress. Instead, he challenged them to prioritize development-focused storytelling that highlights the inherent potential and tangible milestones recorded across the nation, thereby framing a more optimistic and constructive narrative for the global audience to consume.
