Linden Schools Resume Normal Operations After Online Misinformation Sparks Threats and Shelter-in-Place

Linden, NJ – Linden Public Schools resumed normal operations on Friday, October 27, following a day of heightened security and a district-wide shelter-in-place order. The precautionary measures were implemented in response to a barrage of online threats targeting the school district and one of its employees. These threats stemmed from a disturbing online video depicting a woman celebrating the fictitious assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Erroneous online speculation falsely identified the woman in the video as a Linden Public Schools employee, igniting a torrent of menacing messages directed at the district and the innocent employee.

The Linden Police Department, in collaboration with city officials and school administrators, swiftly addressed the situation, increasing police presence at all Linden schools on Friday to reassure students, staff, and the community. Authorities categorically refuted the online claims, confirming that the individual in the video has no affiliation whatsoever with the Linden Public School District. The targeted employee, who remains unnamed for privacy reasons, has been cleared of any involvement and deemed entirely innocent by investigators.

The incident underscores the pervasive and potentially damaging consequences of misinformation in the digital age. The rapid spread of false information across social media platforms led to a real-world crisis, disrupting the educational process and causing significant distress to the targeted individual and the entire school community. The Linden Police Department is continuing its investigation into the origin and dissemination of the false information, while emphasizing the importance of verifying information before sharing it online.

Linden Mayor Derek Armstead expressed outrage at the incident and offered his unwavering support to the affected employee and the school district. “This is a clear example of how quickly misinformation can spread online and cause real-world harm,” stated Mayor Armstead. “It is crucial that we all exercise caution and critical thinking when consuming information online and refrain from sharing unverified claims. The safety and well-being of our community, especially our children, is paramount, and we will not tolerate threats of violence against our schools or our residents.”

Dr. Atiya Y. Perkins, Superintendent of Linden Public Schools, issued a statement condemning the threats and reiterating the district’s commitment to student and staff safety. “Violence has no place in public education,” declared Dr. Perkins. “We are grateful for the unwavering support of the Linden Police Department in ensuring the safety of our school community. This incident highlights the critical need for responsible online behavior and the importance of verifying information before sharing it. We will continue working closely with law enforcement and city officials to maintain a safe and secure learning environment for all.”

The Linden school community is now focused on returning to normalcy after this disruptive incident. Counseling services are being made available to students and staff who may have been affected by the events. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the power and peril of online information and the critical need for digital literacy and responsible online behavior in today’s interconnected world. The Linden Police Department encourages anyone with information about the origin or spread of the false information to contact them immediately. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are determined to hold accountable those responsible for generating and disseminating the malicious misinformation that led to this unwarranted crisis.
