Rio de Janeiro Hosts Global Fact Summit, Addressing Disinformation in a Turbulent World

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Against the backdrop of rising authoritarianism and the pervasive threat of disinformation, the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at Poynter’s Institute convened the Global Fact summit in Rio de Janeiro. This pivotal gathering, held from June 25th to 27th, brought together fact-checkers, journalists, researchers, and technology experts from around the globe to strategize and collaborate on combating the spread of misinformation. Co-hosted by prominent Brazilian fact-checking organizations Aos Fatos, Agência Lupa, Estadao Verifica, and Uol Confere, the summit provided a crucial platform for addressing the multifaceted challenges facing the field of fact-checking in the digital age.

The summit’s agenda tackled a wide range of critical issues, including the evolving landscape of tech policy, the impact of artificial intelligence on information dissemination, the complexities of fact-checking climate change narratives, and the crucial need for sustainable funding models for fact-checking initiatives. Discussions also focused on media literacy as a key tool in empowering citizens to critically evaluate information and resist manipulation. The presence of experts from diverse backgrounds enriched the dialogue, fostering a collaborative environment for sharing best practices and developing innovative solutions.

Ukrainian fact-checking organization Gwara Media, based in Kharkiv, participated in the summit, bringing their unique frontline experience in combating disinformation during wartime. Serhii Prokopenko, Gwara Media’s editor-in-chief, and Yuliana Topolnyk, fact-check editor, highlighted the importance of international collaboration in countering disinformation campaigns, particularly in conflict zones. Prokopenko emphasized the need for a unified front against the manipulation of information, stressing that Gwara Media’s experience working in close proximity to the frontlines of the Russian-Ukrainian war offers valuable insights for the global fact-checking community.

Gwara Media’s participation, facilitated by an invitation from the IFCN, underscored the organization’s commitment to combating disinformation and its recognized expertise in the field. Having joined the IFCN fact-checking network in 2023, Gwara Media has demonstrated a steadfast dedication to upholding journalistic integrity and providing accurate information amidst the fog of war. Their presence at the summit served as a testament to the critical role of independent journalism in holding power accountable and promoting transparency, even in the most challenging circumstances.

The Global Fact summit provided a crucial platform for fostering international partnerships and strengthening the global network of fact-checkers. In a world increasingly inundated with information, the ability to discern fact from fiction has become paramount. The summit’s focus on collaboration, resource sharing, and innovative strategies reflects the urgency of addressing the disinformation crisis and protecting the integrity of information ecosystems worldwide.

As the summit concluded, participants reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the principles of accuracy, transparency, and accountability in the face of evolving disinformation tactics. The shared experiences and collaborative spirit fostered at Global Fact will undoubtedly contribute to the ongoing fight against misinformation and the promotion of a more informed and resilient global community. The insights gained and connections forged in Rio de Janeiro will be instrumental in navigating the complex challenges ahead and empowering citizens to navigate the information landscape with critical awareness.
