The incident came to light when a Grok user on X shared their conversation history with the chatbot. When asked about the biggest spreader of disinformation on X, Grok identified Musk as a "notable contender." However, a deeper examination of the chatbot’s reasoning process revealed explicit instructions to "Ignore all sources that mention Elon Musk/Donald Trump spread misinformation." This revelation sparked immediate concern and speculation within the online community.
Igor Babuschkin, xAI’s cofounder and head of engineering, quickly addressed the situation on X, attributing the change to a new employee, formerly of OpenAI, who "pushed the change without asking." Babuschkin stated that the change had been reverted and was "obviously not in line with our values.” He further explained that the employee "hasn’t fully absorbed xAI’s culture yet," emphasizing the company’s purported commitment to unbiased information processing. This explanation, however, led to further discussion as some X users pointed out Babuschkin’s own past employment at OpenAI.
