Combating Misinformation in Live Broadcasts: India Launches AI-Powered TruthTell Hackathon

New Delhi, India – In a significant move to combat the rising tide of misinformation in live broadcasting journalism, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB), in partnership with the India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA), has launched the groundbreaking TruthTell Hackathon. This innovative competition aims to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to develop real-time misinformation detection and fact-checking tools. The initiative is a key component of the Create in India Challenge (CIC) – Season 1, held under the aegis of the inaugural World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025.

The rapid dissemination of misinformation, particularly during live broadcasts in today’s fast-paced digital environment, poses a significant threat to the credibility of news reporting and public trust. The TruthTell Hackathon seeks to address this critical challenge by fostering the development of AI-driven verification systems that can identify and flag potentially false information in real time, empowering journalists and news organizations to maintain accuracy and transparency in their reporting. With a substantial prize pool of Rs 10 lakh, the hackathon invites developers, data scientists, and media professionals from around the globe to contribute their expertise to this vital effort.

The response to the TruthTell Hackathon has been overwhelming, reflecting the widespread recognition of the urgent need to combat misinformation. Over 5,600 individuals from various corners of the world have registered for the competition, with a notable 36% participation from women, highlighting the growing involvement of women in the technology and media sectors. This diverse pool of participants promises a wealth of innovative solutions and approaches to tackling the complex problem of misinformation detection.

The hackathon is structured in several key phases, culminating in the showcasing of winning solutions at the WAVES Summit 2025. Participants are required to submit their prototypes by February 21, 2025. Final presentations and evaluations will take place at the end of March 2025, followed by the announcement and recognition of the winning teams. The top teams will not only receive cash prizes but also gain access to invaluable mentorship opportunities and incubation support from leading technology experts, further nurturing their innovations and facilitating their implementation in real-world scenarios.

The TruthTell Hackathon benefits from the strong support of several prominent organizations, including the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), IndiaAI Mission, and DataLEADS. These collaborations underscore the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and leveraging technology for societal good. ICEA, the leading industry body representing India’s mobile and electronics sector, plays a crucial role in driving policy advocacy, promoting innovation, and fostering global collaborations to strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem.

As India increasingly embraces AI-driven solutions across various sectors, including journalism, the TruthTell Hackathon stands as a pivotal initiative in shaping the future of ethical and transparent media reporting. By empowering news organizations with cutting-edge tools to combat misinformation, the hackathon contributes significantly to fostering a more informed and trustworthy media landscape. This initiative not only strengthens the integrity of journalism but also enhances public trust in the news, ultimately benefiting society as a whole. The outcomes of this competition are eagerly anticipated, as they hold the potential to revolutionize the way misinformation is detected and countered in the dynamic world of live broadcasting journalism.
