Government Cracks Down on Social Media Platforms Amidst Surge of Hoax Bomb Threats Targeting Airlines
New Delhi – The Indian government has issued a stern warning to social media platforms, demanding immediate action against the proliferation of hoax bomb threats that have disrupted air travel and caused widespread public concern. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has asserted that these threats constitute a significant disruption of public order and jeopardize the nation’s economic security. The ministry emphasized the platforms’ legal obligation to exercise due diligence in removing misinformation that threatens public safety and security, as mandated by the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Information Technology Rules, 2021.
The surge in hoax bomb threats has impacted at least 275 flights since last week, causing significant disruptions to airline operations and affecting countless passengers. Many of these threats have originated and spread through social media platforms, highlighting the urgent need for intervention. MeitY has explicitly cautioned social media companies that their exemption from liability for third-party content will not apply if they fail to comply with their due diligence obligations or if they are found to have abetted or aided in the commission of unlawful acts. This warning reinforces the government’s resolve to hold social media platforms accountable for their role in disseminating harmful misinformation.
The ministry’s advisory underscores the severity of the situation, highlighting the widespread impact of these hoax threats on citizens and the economy. The ease with which misinformation can spread through social media features like forwarding, re-sharing, and re-tweeting has amplified the disruptive potential of these threats. The government’s directive aims to curb this unchecked spread and ensure the platforms take proactive measures to prevent the dissemination of such harmful content.
MeitY has directed social media companies to prevent the posting and sharing of "unlawful or false" information related to bomb threats and to swiftly remove or disable access to such content. Furthermore, the ministry has reminded the platforms of their obligation to inform the relevant authorities if they detect any activity that could pose a threat to India’s security, economic stability, or national unity. Failure to comply with these directives will expose the platforms to legal action under the IT Act as well as the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which has replaced the Indian Penal Code. This action underscores the government’s commitment to holding social media platforms accountable for their role in combating misinformation and maintaining public order.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of air passengers and crew, assuring swift action against those responsible for these malicious acts. Investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, with several agencies, including the Mumbai and Delhi Police, involved in the effort. Last week, a 17-year-old school dropout from Chhattisgarh was apprehended by the Mumbai Police in connection with the threats issued on October 14. The teenager allegedly used a fake social media account to implicate a friend in a dispute.
The government’s strong stance against the spread of misinformation underscores the importance of responsible social media usage and the need for platforms to actively combat harmful content. The incident also highlights the potential consequences of online actions and the need for users to be mindful of the information they share. As investigations continue, the government remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of air travel and holding those responsible for spreading these disruptive threats accountable. The ongoing efforts aim to restore public confidence in air travel and mitigate the negative impact of these hoax threats on the aviation industry and the broader economy.
