India and Pakistan Declare Ceasefire After Weeks of Conflict, But Disinformation War Rages On

New Delhi – After a tense three-week military confrontation sparked by a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 individuals, India and Pakistan have finally agreed to a comprehensive ceasefire. The agreement, effective 5:00 pm on May 10th, 2025, brings a halt to military operations on land, sea, and air. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the ceasefire, announcing that instructions had been issued to both sides for immediate implementation. A follow-up dialogue between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both nations is scheduled for May 12th to further solidify the agreement. The breakthrough followed a public announcement by US President Donald Trump, claiming successful mediation efforts and praising both countries for their commitment to peace.

While the guns have fallen silent on the physical battlefield, a different kind of conflict continues to rage in the digital realm. Social media platforms remain inundated with misinformation, propaganda, and fake news related to the recent conflict. State agencies and cyber cells across India are working tirelessly to counter the deluge of false narratives being disseminated online, often aimed at inciting further tension and mistrust. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check issued a stark warning to citizens, stating that their social media feeds are under attack. Maharashtra Cyber, a state-level cybersecurity unit, reported having removed over 5,000 fake posts related to the conflict, including fabricated stories regarding troop movements and military strategies.

Indian officials have directly accused Pakistan of exploiting social media to propagate propaganda throughout the sensitive period. Foreign Secretary Misri and Indian defence officials have repeatedly highlighted Pakistan’s attempts to mislead the public through disinformation campaigns. Wing Commander Vyomika Singh categorically refuted claims by Pakistan about destroying India’s S-400 and BrahMos missile defence systems, labelling them as "entirely baseless" and asserting that Pakistan, in fact, suffered significant losses during the conflict. These conflicting narratives highlight the challenges in discerning truth from falsehood in the online information ecosystem.

Recognizing the escalating threat posed by online misinformation, the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) issued an urgent online safety advisory on May 9th. The advisory urged citizens to exercise extreme caution and refrain from sharing unverified news, particularly information related to military operations, and instead rely on official government sources for credible updates. The Ministry emphasized that the spread of misinformation not only misleads the public but also has the potential to exacerbate existing tensions and potentially incite further conflict.

To facilitate the reporting of suspicious or inflammatory content, the government established dedicated channels for citizens to flag potentially harmful information. A dedicated WhatsApp number (+91 8799711259) and an email address ([email protected]) were provided to enable users to directly report any content they deemed suspicious or inflammatory. This proactive measure aims to empower citizens to actively participate in combating the spread of misinformation and contribute to a safer and more informed online environment.

Despite the ceasefire agreement, the digital battlefield remains a volatile and contested space. The post-ceasefire period is particularly vulnerable to a surge in false narratives designed to manipulate public opinion, undermine trust in institutions, and potentially reignite tensions between the two nations. As the Indian government maintains pressure on Pakistan through other measures, including the continued suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, the importance of digital hygiene and responsible online behavior becomes even more critical. The Ministry’s advice remains crucial: share responsibly, verify information before forwarding, and report anything suspicious. Maintaining peace extends beyond the physical borders and requires a concerted effort to cleanse the online space of the toxic effects of misinformation. The challenge now is not only to preserve the fragile peace along the India-Pakistan border but also to win the ongoing information war in the digital domain.
