Guyana Elections Commission Battles Tide of Misinformation Ahead of 2025 Polls

Georgetown, Guyana – As Guyana gears up for its General and Regional Elections scheduled for September 1, 2025, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has issued a stark warning to the public: beware the rising tide of fake news and misinformation threatening to undermine the integrity of the electoral process. With the election date drawing closer, a surge of fabricated narratives has proliferated across both traditional and social media platforms, raising concerns about public trust and the potential for electoral disruption. GECOM has intensified its calls for vigilance, urging citizens to critically evaluate information and rely solely on official channels for accurate election-related updates.

The Commission underscored the detrimental impact of disinformation campaigns, emphasizing their potential to sow confusion, erode public confidence in democratic institutions, and suppress voter turnout. False narratives, often spread through social media and amplified by partisan actors, can distort the public’s understanding of electoral procedures, create unnecessary anxieties, and even incite unrest. GECOM has stressed the importance of maintaining a well-informed electorate, capable of discerning credible information from malicious fabrications. The Commission has identified the vulnerability of the public to manipulative tactics and emphasized the need for proactive measures to counter the spread of disinformation.

GECOM has reiterated its commitment to transparency and accuracy, positioning itself as the single authoritative source of information regarding the electoral process. The Commission has urged all stakeholders, including voters, political parties, civil society organizations, and media outlets, to treat GECOM’s official pronouncements as the definitive guide on election-related matters. This call for reliance on official channels aims to counter the proliferation of misinformation and maintain public trust in the electoral process. GECOM has highlighted the importance of verifying information before sharing it, emphasizing the role of responsible citizenship in combating the spread of fake news.

To ensure widespread access to accurate information, GECOM has committed to proactive dissemination of updates through its official channels. These include the GECOM website (www.gecom.org.gy), official press releases, and verified social media accounts. The Commission has encouraged the public to utilize these resources to stay informed and to cross-reference any election-related information they encounter with GECOM’s official statements. This multi-pronged approach aims to provide readily accessible and verifiable information to the public, thereby mitigating the impact of misinformation campaigns.

GECOM’s appeal extends beyond simply accessing information; the Commission has stressed the importance of critical thinking and media literacy. Citizens are urged to scrutinize information they encounter, particularly online, and to verify its source before accepting it as factual. This emphasis on critical evaluation aims to empower the public to discern credible information from fabricated narratives, thereby fostering a more informed and resilient electorate. GECOM has reiterated its commitment to a free, fair, and transparent electoral process and called on all Guyanese citizens to participate actively in safeguarding the integrity of their democracy.

The Commission views the fight against misinformation as a collective responsibility, calling on all Guyanese citizens to work together to protect the integrity of the democratic process. By promoting critical thinking, fostering media literacy, and relying on official sources of information, Guyanese citizens can play a vital role in ensuring that the September 1, 2025, General and Regional Elections accurately reflect the will of the people. GECOM remains steadfast in its commitment to conducting credible elections and calls on all stakeholders to join in the effort to combat the insidious threat of misinformation. The future of Guyana’s democracy rests on the collective vigilance and informed participation of its citizens.
