France Rejects Russia’s Baseless Allegation of Drug Use by Macron, Merz, and Starmer

The Élysée Palace Denounces Kremlin’s Cocaine Allegations Against Macron, Merz, and Starmer as "Disinformation"

Paris – The Élysée Palace has vehemently dismissed allegations circulated by Kremlin-linked figures suggesting that French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (not Friedrich Merz as initially reported), and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer engaged in cocaine use during a train journey to Kyiv. The Palace has labeled the claims as “disinformation” and a blatant attempt to undermine European unity and support for Ukraine.

The false narrative originated on pro-Russian social media platforms and quickly gained traction, being amplified by Kremlin spokesperson Maria Zakharova and other Russian officials. The claims centered around a video clip showing Macron retrieving a handkerchief or tissue from a table during a meeting with Starmer and Scholz. Conspiracy theorists manipulated the footage, suggesting Macron was concealing a bag of cocaine and that Merz was holding a cocaine spoon. The Élysée Palace swiftly countered these allegations, providing high-resolution images clearly identifying the object as a tissue and denouncing the claims as absurd.

The Élysée Palace’s response emphasized the absurdity of the accusations, emphasizing the importance of vigilance against such manipulative tactics. The Palace stressed that European unity is paramount in the face of Russian aggression and that such disinformation campaigns aim to sow discord and undermine international efforts to support Ukraine. The statement contrasted the reality of European leaders collaborating to build peace with the desperate attempts to discredit them through fabricated narratives.

This latest incident is part of a broader pattern of disinformation campaigns by the Kremlin aimed at discrediting European leaders and disrupting Western support for Ukraine. Russian officials, including Zakharova, have a history of making similar unsubstantiated allegations about drug use by Western and Ukrainian leaders. These efforts coincide with a surge in Kremlin attempts to push for a ceasefire in Ukraine, likely under conditions favorable to Russia.

The Kremlin’s strategy involves manipulating public opinion and portraying Russia’s terms for a settlement as reasonable. This includes direct engagement with Western media to disseminate their narrative and attempts to exploit existing political divides. The disinformation campaign targeting Macron, Scholz, and Starmer seems designed to sow distrust and undermine their credibility, hindering their efforts to maintain a united front against Russian aggression.

The incident involving the alleged cocaine use highlights the insidious nature of disinformation in the digital age, demonstrating how easily manipulated content can spread rapidly and gain traction. It underscores the importance of critical thinking, media literacy, and relying on credible sources of information. The Élysée Palace’s swift and decisive response serves as a model for countering disinformation campaigns, exposing the false narrative and reaffirming the commitment to European unity and support for Ukraine. The broader context of the ongoing conflict and Russia’s persistent disinformation efforts emphasizes the need for continued vigilance and international cooperation to counter these tactics.
