Belagavi Police File Charges Against X Users for Spreading False Information About Colonel Sofiya Qureshi’s Family

Belagavi, Karnataka – Local police have taken action against three individuals on X (formerly Twitter) for disseminating false information concerning the family of Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a distinguished officer involved in Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. The misinformation alleged that Colonel Qureshi’s family, residing in Konnur village of Gokak taluk, Belagavi district, was subjected to an attack by RSS workers.

The Belagavi police initiated a suo motu case against the three X account holders – Annis Uddir, Khubaani, and Drrumi – after their posts containing the fabricated story came to light during routine social media monitoring. The posts falsely claimed that RSS activists assaulted Colonel Qureshi’s son, set fire to their house, and chanted Hindu Rashtra slogans. Furthermore, the posts erroneously stated that the family’s movements were restricted and they were being relocated to New Delhi, adding that they were on the RSS’s hit list.

The police, in their official statement, emphasized the inflammatory and divisive nature of the content shared by these accounts, highlighting the potential to incite religious disharmony and disrupt public order. Consequently, charges have been filed against the individuals under Sections 353(2) and 192(A) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. These sections address promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and other factors, and spreading statements that create or promote disharmony or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will between different religious groups.

Colonel Sofiya Qureshi gained prominence for her role in Operation Sindoor, a significant military operation against Pakistan. She, along with two other officers, briefed the media about the operation’s details. The false narrative surrounding her family quickly gained traction on social media, prompting the police intervention. The incident underscores the growing concern over misinformation and the need for responsible social media usage.

The Belagavi police’s swift action in registering the FIR sends a clear message against the spread of fake news, particularly content that can incite communal disharmony. The investigation is ongoing and further details are awaited. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of spreading misinformation on social media platforms and the importance of verifying information before sharing it.

This incident also highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating the rapid spread of misinformation online. It also raises questions about the role and responsibility of social media platforms in curbing fake news and promoting responsible usage. The case is likely to have broader implications for how law enforcement and social media companies address similar incidents in the future.
