Nigeria Rejects Religious Persecution Claims, Counters Misinformation Campaign

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched a robust defense against what it terms a deliberate campaign of misinformation concerning alleged targeted killings of Christians within the country. The ministry contends that these narratives are strategically crafted to mislead the international community, particularly the United States, into designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) due to purported religious persecution. In an official statement released on Friday, the ministry unequivocally rejected claims of religious bias fueling the nation’s ongoing security challenges, emphasizing the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting all citizens regardless of their faith.

The Nigerian government acknowledges the complex security landscape, characterized by insurgency, banditry, and communal conflicts, but insists that these issues are not rooted in religious discrimination. The statement underscored that violence in the predominantly Muslim northern region affects various communities and is not a systematic campaign against any particular religious group. The ministry firmly asserted that portraying these incidents as religious persecution is both erroneous and misleading, emphasizing Nigeria’s identity as a multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation where religious tolerance and coexistence are deeply ingrained.

The statement highlighted the multifaceted nature of Nigeria’s security challenges, attributing them to a combination of criminal activities, terrorism, and communal clashes, including long-standing conflicts between farmers and herders. It underscored that these issues, rather than religious discrimination, are the primary drivers of insecurity in the country. The ministry detailed the significant efforts undertaken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to address these challenges, including increased security deployments to combat insurgents and bandits, enhanced intelligence gathering to preempt attacks, and community engagement programs designed to foster peace at the grassroots level.

Further emphasizing the government’s commitment to resolving the root causes of conflict, the statement highlighted the introduction of livestock reforms aimed at mitigating the persistent clashes between pastoralists and farmers. The establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Livestock Development, along with the appointment of a Special Adviser and Coordinator of Livestock Reforms, signifies the government’s proactive approach to implementing sustainable solutions for pastoral farming and preventing land disputes. This strategic initiative underscores the administration’s recognition of the complex interplay between resource competition and security challenges.

Addressing the international community, media organizations, and civil society groups, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged responsible information dissemination and verification before making pronouncements that could exacerbate tensions within the country. The ministry cautioned against the spread of unverified claims that have the potential to undermine national unity and stability. Reiterating Nigeria’s standing as a beacon of religious tolerance and coexistence in Africa, the government welcomed constructive engagement and international support in addressing its security challenges.

However, the ministry firmly rejected any attempts to distort the reality on the ground, misrepresent Nigeria’s security situation, or advocate for its wrongful designation as a country engaged in religious persecution. The statement underscored the importance of global cooperation in combating misinformation and preventing its use to fuel divisions or disrupt the country’s long-standing commitment to religious harmony. The government emphasized its dedication to upholding the rights of all citizens and fostering a society where religious freedom and peaceful coexistence are paramount. The ministry’s statement serves as a strong rebuttal to allegations of religious persecution, emphasizing the complexity of Nigeria’s security challenges and the government’s commitment to addressing them through a multi-pronged approach.
