BNP Accuses Rivals of Spreading Disinformation on Reform Stance, Reasserts Commitment to Democracy

DHAKA, Bangladesh – The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has vehemently denied allegations of being resistant to reform, accusing a “malicious group” of spreading disinformation to tarnish the party’s image. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir addressed these concerns during a press conference held at the party’s Gulshan office, emphasizing the party’s commitment to a democratic Bangladesh and its dedication to working towards a free and fair electoral process. He reiterated BNP’s primary goal: restoring democratic principles that, according to the party, have been suppressed under the current administration for the past 15 years.

Fakhrul stressed the BNP’s unwavering commitment to democratic ideals and asserted the party’s clean and transparent political stance. He directly challenged the motives of those propagating what he called false narratives about the BNP’s position on reforms, urging the public to scrutinize the intentions of those spreading such claims. He framed the disinformation campaign as a deliberate attempt to undermine the party’s credibility and distract from its core message of democratic restoration.

The BNP leader also addressed the ongoing activities of the Consensus Commission, expressing a mixture of interest, expectation, and some frustration with the process. While acknowledging the importance of the commission’s work, Fakhrul underscored the BNP’s active participation and contribution to the discussions. He emphasized the party’s commitment to providing constructive input and logical arguments to guide the commission towards decisions that genuinely serve the best interests of the people. Fakhrul further stressed the BNP’s eagerness to find common ground and build consensus to move the nation forward.

Fakhrul voiced the BNP’s concerns about potential reforms that could significantly impact the public interest without adequate public involvement. He cautioned against making substantial changes without proper consultation and emphasized the importance of considering the voice of the people in any reform process. This statement reflects the BNP’s stance on the need for inclusive and participatory governance. He reiterated the party’s commitment to representing the interests of the Bangladeshi people and ensuring that any reforms implemented genuinely benefit the nation as a whole.

The BNP Secretary General unequivocally reiterated the party’s position on the necessity of timely and free elections, criticizing those who seek to delay the electoral process. He labeled such actors as anti-democratic forces and opponents of the spirit of the July-August uprising, implying that they stand against the historical struggle for democracy in Bangladesh. He emphasized the BNP’s view that adhering to a democratic electoral timeline is crucial for the country’s progress and stability.

Finally, in a call for unity and national progress, Fakhrul urged all stakeholders to transcend partisan interests and contribute to nation-building. He also touched upon the July Proclamation, stating that while the BNP had previously expressed its views on the matter, it remained open to further discussion and engagement. This gesture suggests the party’s willingness to participate in constructive dialogue and seek solutions that benefit the nation as a whole. The press conference concluded with Fakhrul reiterating the BNP’s core values of democracy, transparency, and service to the people of Bangladesh. He encouraged the public to remain vigilant against misinformation and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to working towards a more democratic and prosperous future for the nation.
