Exposing the Christian Right’s Anti-Transgender Disinformation Network: A Collaboration with the Southern Poverty Law Center

The Anti-Trans Disinformation Machine: How the Christian Right Weaponized Pseudoscience

The Southern Poverty Law Center’s groundbreaking report, Project CAPTAIN, exposes a vast and interconnected network of organizations actively engaged in disseminating anti-trans pseudoscience. This sophisticated network isn’t an accidental creation but a deliberate strategy by the Christian right to undermine public trust in affirming medical care for transgender individuals, particularly children. The report reveals how these groups manipulate scientific research, exploit academic journals, and amplify misleading narratives to fuel legislative attacks on transgender rights.

Project CAPTAIN traces the dramatic escalation of anti-trans legislation in the early 2020s, revealing how the surge was underpinned by a proliferation of pseudoscientific claims. While organizations like the American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) had previously been dismissed in legal settings due to their overt bias, the Christian right strategically invested in newer, seemingly neutral groups. Organizations like the Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine (SEGM) and Genspect, initially formed by academics discontented with the evolving understanding of transgender identity, gained prominence. The Christian right leveraged these groups’ perceived credibility to legitimize their anti-trans agenda, expertly distancing themselves from overtly discriminatory groups while quietly providing funding and influence.

The report’s analysis of thousands of anti-trans studies and citations revealed a pattern of circular referencing within the network. These groups consistently cite the same limited body of literature, often misrepresenting or misinterpreting legitimate scientific studies to support their pre-determined conclusions. A significant portion of their citations are not peer-reviewed research at all, but rather editorials, opinion pieces, and letters to the editor, which are then falsely presented as scientific evidence. This tactic allows anti-trans activists to create an illusion of scientific consensus where none exists.

Further investigation uncovered that some anti-trans figures hold editorial positions in influential journals, allowing them to manipulate the peer-review process and publish biased research. This manipulation gives their work an air of legitimacy, even when it lacks scientific rigor. One prominent example cited in the report is the case of Ken Zucker, editor-in-chief of the Archives of Sexual Behavior, who facilitated the publication of research promoting anti-trans viewpoints. The report also highlights the infamous Cass Report, which similarly employed deceptive citation practices to bolster its claims, referencing even its own internal correspondence as if it were published research.

One of the most egregious examples of this manipulation involves a 2011 Swedish study by Cecilia Dhejne. Anti-trans groups frequently cite this study, often inaccurately, to argue that gender transition is ineffective and even harmful, claiming it shows significantly higher suicide rates among transgender individuals after transition. However, this interpretation ignores the study’s nuanced findings, which demonstrate that suicide rates improved over time and eventually approached those of the general population. Dhejne herself has publicly denounced the misuse and misrepresentation of her work. This selective use of data and deliberate distortion of research findings exemplify the network’s tactics.

The consequences of this widespread disinformation campaign are devastating. The pseudoscience promoted by these groups fuels harmful legislation, restricts access to life-saving medical care for transgender youth, and perpetuates societal stigma and discrimination. The report underscores the urgency for media outlets and academic institutions to critically evaluate research claims and resist the temptation to uncritically disseminate misleading information. A deeper analysis of citations and methodologies is crucial to combating the spread of anti-trans pseudoscience.

Project CAPTAIN serves as a critical wake-up call, exposing the sophisticated machinery driving the anti-trans movement. By understanding the tactics employed by this network, we can better counter their efforts and protect the rights and well-being of transgender individuals. The report emphasizes the need for increased media literacy, rigorous fact-checking, and a commitment to amplifying accurate scientific information. The future of transgender rights hinges on our ability to dismantle this disinformation machine and affirm the validity of transgender identities and experiences.
