Unveiling the Food Industry’s Influence on Climate Narratives: A Deep Dive into Disinformation and Greenwashing

NEW YORK—As Climate Week NYC approaches, a critical discussion is brewing, focusing on the intricate ways the food industry, particularly the meat and dairy sectors, shapes narratives, scientific research, and media reporting concerning the role of food systems in the climate crisis. This conversation comes at a crucial juncture, just ahead of global climate negotiations where the lobbying efforts of these industries have intensified. The event, titled “Navigating Narratives on Climate Change and Food Systems,” is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24, 2025, from 2:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. EDT at MacDowell, New York. It promises an interactive exploration of science and storytelling in the age of disinformation and greenwashing, co-hosted by the Center for Biological Diversity, Brighter Green, and Changing Markets Foundation.

The looming climate crisis demands a clear-eyed assessment of all contributing factors, and the food industry’s role is increasingly under scrutiny. While the link between food production and greenhouse gas emissions is well-established, the narrative surrounding this connection often gets muddied by industry influence. This event seeks to dissect the tactics employed by powerful agribusiness interests to downplay their impact and obstruct meaningful action. From subtle greenwashing campaigns to outright disinformation, these strategies pose a significant obstacle to evidence-based decision-making and public understanding.

A panel of experts will delve into the complexities of this issue, providing insights into reporting trends, media perspectives on food and climate coverage, and the industry-led backlash against scientific findings. Stephanie Feldstein and Alex Tey from the Center for Biological Diversity, along with Nusa Urbancic, CEO of Changing Markets Foundation, will be joined by Marlana Malerich, co-founder of Rooted Research, and Michael Silberman, founder of Food Disinfo Lab. Their combined expertise will illuminate the ways in which misinformation spreads and influences public opinion and policy. The discussion will also analyze the role of “nutrition misinformation superspreaders” – individuals or entities that disseminate inaccurate or misleading information about food and nutrition, often with the aim of promoting specific products or agendas.

This event aims to equip attendees with the tools to navigate this complex landscape and identify industry tactics designed to obfuscate the truth. By exposing these strategies, the organizers hope to foster a more informed public discourse and empower individuals to demand greater accountability from the food industry. The focus will be on fostering a solutions-oriented dialogue grounded in scientific evidence, paving the way for a sustainable and climate-compatible food future. Following the public event, an invite-only roundtable discussion for reporters will provide an opportunity for deeper engagement with the issues raised.

The urgency of the climate crisis necessitates a rapid shift towards more sustainable food systems. Food production currently accounts for one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, with the majority stemming from meat and dairy production. These industries also contribute significantly to biodiversity loss, deforestation, water pollution, and resource conflicts. While media attention on the link between food and climate is growing, it remains a relatively small portion of overall climate coverage. This underrepresentation is partly attributed to the influence of the powerful agribusiness lobby, which actively works to minimize public awareness and obstruct policy changes that could threaten their profits.

The panel discussion will explore the various strategies employed by these actors to manipulate public perception and undermine scientific consensus. These tactics include funding biased research, disseminating misleading information through industry-backed organizations, and lobbying against regulations that would promote sustainable practices. The event will also examine how these narratives impact public opinion and policy decisions, often leading to inaction or the adoption of ineffective measures. By understanding these tactics, individuals can better discern credible information from industry propaganda and advocate for meaningful change. The organizers encourage public participation and emphasize the importance of informed engagement in shaping a sustainable food future.
