Sierra Leone’s Fight Against Fake News: Empowering Journalists in the Digital Age

Sierra Leone, a nation with a burgeoning online presence among its youthful population, faces a growing challenge: the rampant spread of mis- and disinformation. To combat this threat to informed public discourse, BBC Media Action launched a comprehensive training program aimed at equipping journalists, bloggers, and social media influencers with the necessary skills and tools to identify, analyze, and debunk false information. This initiative underscores the critical need for media literacy in a digital landscape increasingly saturated with misleading content. The project, generously supported by UNDP, represents a proactive step in bolstering Sierra Leone’s information ecosystem.

The training program unfolded in two phases, strategically designed to maximize impact. In the autumn of 2024, an intensive 22-day advanced training course was conducted for 25 senior and mid-career journalists, bloggers, and influencers selected from various regions across the country. This advanced training, facilitated by seasoned BBC trainers Marie Helly and Lazar Čovs, employed a blended learning approach, incorporating both in-person and online sessions. This dual modality ensured accessibility and flexibility while fostering a rich learning environment.

To extend the reach and amplify the project’s impact, a “multiplier effect” strategy was implemented. Two graduates of the advanced training program subsequently trained an additional 35 journalists and bloggers from Freetown and other regions. This cascade training model empowered local experts to disseminate knowledge and skills within their communities, further strengthening the capacity of Sierra Leone’s media landscape to tackle information disorder.

The training curriculum focused on practical skills development, equipping participants with cutting-edge techniques for verifying information and navigating the complex online sphere. Participants gained expertise in utilizing Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) tools, enabling them to conduct thorough investigations and authenticate information using publicly available resources. The training also emphasized responsible reporting practices, including fact-checking protocols and ethical considerations. By fostering critical thinking and analytical skills, the program empowers participants to discern credible information from fabricated content.

The impact of the training is already evident in the testimonials of participants, who describe a marked improvement in their ability to navigate the information landscape. Claudia J.D Redwood-Sawyerr, a journalist and fact-checker with SLAJ-iVerify, notes the increased confidence the training has instilled in her work. She highlights the importance of continually adapting to the evolving challenges posed by information disorder and emphasizes the value of new tools and techniques in providing accurate and balanced reporting. Sallu Kamuskay, founder and CEO of Salone Messenger, emphasizes the profound responsibility that bloggers and storytellers bear in ensuring the veracity of their content. He expresses gratitude for the opportunity to acquire new fact-checking tools, recognizing the potential impact of online narratives in shaping public perception and even historical trajectories.

Iris Aminata Bangura, a journalist, underscores the crucial role of accuracy, balance, and credibility in journalistic practice. She highlights the tendency to prioritize speed over accuracy in the digital age and emphasizes the importance of continuous professional development. Bangura specifically notes the valuable insights gained into OSINT tools, acknowledging their significance in enhancing journalistic investigations and promoting responsible reporting. Christian Conteh, another journalist who participated in the program, expresses feeling fully equipped to identify and counter mis- and disinformation. He emphasizes the practical applicability of the acquired skills and tools, highlighting their potential to enrich storytelling and enhance the impact of journalistic work.

The BBC Media Action’s training initiative represents a crucial investment in Sierra Leone’s information landscape. By empowering journalists, bloggers, and influencers with the necessary skills and tools to combat mis- and disinformation, the program strengthens the foundation for informed public discourse. The project’s focus on capacity building and knowledge dissemination through the ‘multiplier effect’ strategy ensures sustainable impact, fostering a culture of media literacy and critical thinking among content creators. This collaborative effort, supported by UNDP, underscores the collective responsibility to address the challenges of information disorder in an increasingly interconnected world. As Sierra Leone’s digital landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like this will play a pivotal role in upholding the integrity of information and fostering a more informed and resilient society. The testimonials from participants serve as a testament to the program’s effectiveness in equipping individuals with the tools and confidence to navigate the complexities of the digital age and contribute to a more accurate and trustworthy information environment.
