Montgomery County Executive Condemns HHS Secretary Kennedy’s Vaccine Misinformation, Underscoring Public Health Crisis

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich has launched a scathing attack on Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the Trump administration, accusing them of disseminating dangerous vaccine misinformation that jeopardizes public health and puts lives at risk. Elrich’s condemnation comes in the wake of a contentious Senate hearing where Kennedy’s views on vaccines and public health measures were sharply questioned by lawmakers, including Republican Senator Bill Cassidy.

Elrich underscored Montgomery County’s exemplary response to the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the county’s nation-leading vaccination rates and remarkably low death rates. He attributed this success to the community’s trust in science and the dedication of its residents, many of whom work in federal agencies and life sciences companies. He emphasized the critical role of Operation Warp Speed, a Trump administration initiative, in the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines, contrasting its success with the potentially disastrous consequences of pursuing “herd immunity” without vaccination. He argued that millions of lives were saved due to the vaccine’s rapid development and deployment.

The County Executive expressed outrage at Kennedy’s actions, particularly his decision to slash funding for mRNA vaccine research and his alleged claim that “the Covid vaccine killed more people than Covid.” Elrich stressed the danger of having someone in charge of public health actively undermining vaccines, emphasizing that such actions not only disregard scientific evidence but also endanger the lives of all Americans. He invoked Montgomery County’s experience during the pandemic as a testament to the life-saving power of vaccines.

Elrich further emphasized that concern over Kennedy’s actions transcended partisan lines. He cited Republican Senator Bill Cassidy’s strong criticism of Kennedy during the Senate hearing. Cassidy, a physician, expressed alarm at Kennedy’s past association with anti-vaccine groups, his drastic cuts to vaccine research funding, and his questionable appointments to the CDC’s vaccine advisory panel, many of whom have served as paid witnesses in cases against vaccine manufacturers. Cassidy also raised concerns about new restrictions on COVID-19 vaccine access, particularly for healthy young people.

The County Executive echoed Cassidy’s concerns, highlighting Kennedy’s seeming conflict of interest in appointing individuals with ties to vaccine litigation to the advisory panel. He also condemned the new restrictions on vaccine access, arguing that they effectively deny individuals the opportunity to protect themselves and contribute to public health. Elrich called on Republicans to urge former President Trump to remove Kennedy from his position before he inflicts further damage on public health efforts. He stressed the non-partisan nature of public health, framing it as a matter of life and death.

Elrich concluded his message with a strong call to action, urging bipartisan efforts to address the concerns raised by Kennedy’s decisions and the Trump administration’s policies. He stressed the urgency of combating vaccine misinformation and restoring public trust in science-based public health measures. He painted a stark picture of the potential consequences of inaction, warning that continued erosion of public trust in vaccines could lead to a resurgence of preventable diseases and further loss of life. He reiterated his commitment to protecting the health and well-being of Montgomery County residents and urged everyone to prioritize factual information and informed decision-making when it comes to vaccination.
