Edited TikTok Video Fuels Misinformation Regarding Indonesia’s Anti-Corruption Chief

Doctored Image Fuels False Claim of Ahok’s Appointment as Indonesia’s Anti-Corruption Chief

A manipulated image circulating on TikTok has ignited a whirlwind of misinformation, falsely claiming that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto appointed former Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, widely known as Ahok, as the head of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). The doctored image, which has garnered millions of views, capitalized on Ahok’s reputation as a staunch anti-corruption figure and sparked fervent discussions online. However, the claim is demonstrably false, as official records and photographic evidence confirm that President Prabowo appointed senior police officer Setyo Budiyanto to the crucial position.

The fabricated image emerged shortly after President Prabowo’s inauguration of the new KPK chief in December 2024. It portrays a seemingly official interaction between President Prabowo and Ahok, fueling the narrative that the former governor was chosen to spearhead the nation’s fight against corruption. The accompanying text on the TikTok video amplified the misinformation, proclaiming, "Prabowo inaugurated Ahok as KPK Chief today!! Mega corruption from Jokowi’s (ex-Indonesian president Joko Widodo’s) era will be hunted to the death. Those who agree, come closer. Those who are corrupt must be panicking right now." This inflammatory language played into existing public sentiment surrounding corruption and further propelled the spread of the false narrative.

A thorough investigation, including reverse image searches and cross-referencing with official government announcements, has debunked the manipulated image and the accompanying claim. The authentic photograph, published by Indonesian state news agency Antara, depicts President Prabowo with Agricultural Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman on October 1, 2024, shortly before the announcement of Sulaiman’s retention in the cabinet. The image of Ahok, which was superimposed onto the original photo, was taken from a separate photograph published by local news outlet SINDOnews in August 2024. The seamless merging of these two unrelated images created a convincing, yet entirely fabricated, scene.

The false claim regarding Ahok’s appointment exploits his well-established image as a crusader against corruption. During his tenure as Jakarta governor, Ahok earned both praise and controversy for his aggressive efforts to tackle graft and improve the city’s infrastructure. His direct approach and intolerance for corruption resonated with many citizens, but also made him a target for political opponents. His eventual downfall came after controversial remarks on the campaign trail during his re-election bid led to accusations of insulting Islam. This complex history makes him a potent figure in Indonesian politics, and his image is easily leveraged for political manipulation.

The rapid dissemination of the doctored image underscores the power of social media in spreading misinformation, particularly in politically charged environments. The TikTok video gained significant traction, accumulating millions of views before being debunked. This incident highlights the critical need for media literacy and fact-checking in the digital age. The ease with which manipulated images can be created and shared presents a significant challenge for maintaining accurate information flow.

As of January 13, 2025, Ahok has not been appointed to any government position. The dissemination of this false information serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of online spaces to manipulation and the importance of verifying information before accepting it as truth. This incident underscores the ongoing challenge of combating misinformation in the digital age and highlights the need for critical engagement with online content. The manipulation of Ahok’s image and the subsequent spread of the false claim demonstrates the potential for online platforms to be used for spreading misleading narratives and potentially influencing public opinion.
