Delhi Power Minister Clashes with Opposition Over Power Outage Claims

A heated exchange erupted between Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) opposition over allegations of prolonged power cuts in the capital. Sood vehemently denied the claims, accusing AAP leaders, including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Leader of the Opposition Atishi, of spreading "misinformation" and using "fake data" to incite unrest. He threatened strict legal action, including criminal charges, against those propagating these allegations, particularly through social media.

Sood countered AAP’s narrative by presenting data that purportedly showed 21,597 instances of power cuts exceeding one hour during AAP’s tenure last year. He defended the recent outages as part of routine pre-summer maintenance, essential for ensuring grid reliability. He emphasized that these procedures are annual occurrences and not indicative of a power crisis, particularly given the new government’s relatively short 40-day tenure. He questioned AAP’s claims of uninterrupted power supply during their decade-long rule, pointing to the presence of large generators at AAP ministers’ residences, including Atishi’s, which he said was supplied by two separate feeders.

Atishi retaliated, accusing the BJP-led government of plunging Delhi into a power crisis within weeks of assuming office. She dismissed Sood’s statements as "blatant lies" intended to cover up their failures. Citing data presented in the Rajya Sabha and a consumer service rating report that ranked Delhi’s power companies among the top three nationwide, she maintained that Delhi enjoyed round-the-clock electricity supply. She further alleged over 50 unscheduled power cuts in March, directly contradicting Sood’s assertions. She refuted the accusation of AAP workers or bots fueling the online complaints, claiming instead that the complaints originated from BJP supporters.

The conflict escalated during an assembly session where Sood accused Atishi of orchestrating a conspiracy using fake social media accounts. The opposition MLAs staged a walkout during Sood’s address, prompting Speaker Vijender Gupta to criticize their "irresponsible conduct." Previously, AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar had called for an adjournment motion to discuss the power outage issue, but AAP MLAs were absent when the motion was brought up, drawing a warning from the Speaker and calls for action from BJP MLAs.

The clash underscores the ongoing political tension between the ruling BJP and the opposition AAP in Delhi, with power supply becoming the latest battleground. The conflicting data and accusations highlight the challenge in verifying the actual extent of the power outages and their underlying causes. The threat of legal action against those disseminating information deemed "misinformation" raises concerns about freedom of speech and potential implications for public discourse.

The dispute also brings into focus the politicization of essential services like electricity, often used as a tool to criticize or defend government performance. The contrasting narratives presented by both sides, including the use of data and anecdotal evidence, illustrate the difficulty for the public in discerning the truth amid partisan claims. The incident also highlights the increasing influence of social media in shaping public perception and the potential for its manipulation in political battles. The walkout by the opposition MLAs, while a common form of protest, also raises questions about their engagement with legislative processes and the potential for such actions to hinder constructive dialogue and resolution of critical issues.
