Political Violence in Minnesota Sparks Right-Wing Disinformation Campaign

Minneapolis, MN – June 18, 2025 – A tragic act of political violence that left two dead and two critically injured has ignited a firestorm of misinformation and partisan finger-pointing, laying bare the deep fissures that continue to divide American society. The shooting deaths of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, coupled with the attempted murder of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, has sent shockwaves through the nation. Early reports indicate the suspect, Vance Boelter, is a conservative evangelical Christian with ties to Donald Trump’s political rallies, allegedly targeting liberals and abortion rights advocates. However, a coordinated effort within certain right-wing circles has emerged to distort the narrative and deflect responsibility.

This disinformation campaign, actively propagated on Elon Musk’s social media platform X and fueled by a misleading article in the New York Post, attempts to portray Boelter as a leftist agent provocateur. The Post’s story, published amidst the initial chaos following the shooting, insinuated a connection between Boelter’s prior appointment to a minor bipartisan commission by Governor Tim Walz and the presence of “No Kings” protest flyers in Boelter’s vehicle. This flimsy association aimed to paint the suspect as a leftist, despite mounting evidence to the contrary. The narrative quickly gained traction online, amplified by prominent figures such as Elon Musk himself, who initially tweeted that "the left is murderously violent" before amending his post to target the "far left."

President Trump, when questioned about the shootings, declined to contact Governor Walz, dismissing him as "whacked out" and perpetuating the false narrative that Walz had appointed the suspect to a significant position. This blatant disregard for the victims and their families further exacerbated the politicization of the tragedy. The President’s comments reflect a troubling trend of exploiting tragic events for political gain, deepening the partisan divide and undermining efforts to address the root causes of violence.

Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah also played a critical role in spreading the misinformation, sharing an image of Boelter with the caption, "This is what happens when Marxists don’t get their way." This inflammatory rhetoric, devoid of factual basis, served to further radicalize an already polarized online audience. Whether Senator Lee genuinely believes the disinformation or cynically exploits it for political advantage, the impact remains deeply damaging. The willingness of prominent figures to disseminate unsubstantiated claims underscores the erosion of trust in traditional media and the rise of partisan echo chambers.

The spread of this fabricated narrative highlights the dangerous role of social media and partisan news outlets in shaping public perceptions. The speed and reach of online platforms enable misinformation to disseminate rapidly, bypassing traditional fact-checking mechanisms. This creates a breeding ground for conspiracy theories and fuels distrust in established institutions, further undermining democratic discourse. The Murdoch-owned New York Post, notorious for its sensationalist reporting, played a key role in igniting this disinformation campaign, demonstrating a reckless disregard for journalistic ethics.

Senator Tina Smith of Minnesota publicly admonished Senator Lee for his callous and misleading posts, forcing him to eventually delete them. However, the damage has been done. The false narrative, once planted, continues to circulate online. The incident underscores the urgent need for media literacy and critical thinking in the digital age. It also highlights the critical role of responsible journalism in combating misinformation and upholding democratic values. The long-term consequences of this disinformation campaign remain to be seen, but it serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of truth in a hyper-partisan world.
