Moldovan Election Commission Combats Disinformation Campaign Targeting Transnistrian Voters

CHISINAU, Moldova – The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Moldova has issued a stern warning regarding a sophisticated disinformation campaign circulating on social media platforms. This campaign falsely claims that polling stations intended for voters residing in the Transnistrian region, a breakaway territory on the left bank of the Dniester River, have been closed due to alleged Russian influence. The CEC has categorically denied these claims, emphasizing that they are entirely fabricated and designed to mislead the public.

The disinformation campaign employs a deceptive tactic involving a cloned website mimicking the official CEC website. This fraudulent site, using the deceptive “.st” extension instead of the legitimate “.md” extension, hosts a fabricated statement announcing the closure of polling stations. The genuine CEC website, cec.md, contains no such announcement, and neither do any of the Commission’s official social media accounts. This elaborate scheme highlights the lengths to which malicious actors are willing to go to disrupt the electoral process and sow confusion among voters.

The CEC has taken swift action to counter this disinformation campaign, issuing public alerts across various channels. They have clearly identified the fraudulent website and statement, urging citizens to rely solely on official sources for election-related information. These include the official CEC website (cec.md), the voter information platform (alegator.cec.md), and the Commission’s verified social media pages on Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, and TikTok. The CEC is committed to ensuring transparent and accurate information dissemination to protect the integrity of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

This incident underscores the growing concern about the spread of disinformation and its potential impact on democratic processes, particularly in a region with existing geopolitical tensions. Transnistria, with its complex relationship with Moldova and historical ties to Russia, has been a focal point of such concerns. The fabricated claims about poll closures exploit these sensitivities and could have detrimental effects on voter turnout and confidence in the electoral process. The CEC’s proactive approach to combating this disinformation campaign is crucial in maintaining public trust and ensuring a fair and credible election.

The CEC is not only actively debunking the false information but also encouraging citizens to become active participants in safeguarding the integrity of the elections. They have urged the public to report any suspicious online content related to the elections and to be vigilant against the spread of misinformation. This collaborative approach, involving both the electoral authority and the citizenry, is essential in countering disinformation campaigns that aim to undermine democratic processes.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by disinformation in the digital age, particularly during election periods. The CEC’s efforts highlight the importance of media literacy, critical thinking, and relying on verified information sources. As the parliamentary elections approach, the Commission remains committed to upholding the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring that all eligible voters have access to accurate and reliable information. They continue to encourage citizens to remain vigilant and to contribute to a free and fair election process by reporting any suspicious activity and relying solely on official information channels.
